GULFPORT — Defending Region 4-7A champ Gulfport finished up the first round of league play Tuesday night.
And though the Admirals won’t go undefeated through the region race this year like last season, they still are in prime position to repeat in the top spot in the league standings.
Gulfport picked up a big region road win over contending foe West Harrison 52-39, moving to an impressive 18-1 overall and more importantly 5-1 in league play. The Hurricanes drop to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the region standings.

Gulfport led throughout the contest, taking a 13-9 lead after the opening period thanks to six points from big man Morris Robertson.
The Admirals steadily stretched that advantage out throughout the second stanza, pushing it out to double digits at halftime, as Travor Frost had six points and Robertson added five more and the visitors went into intermission up 29-16.
The Hurricanes never really threatened in the second half, and even trailed by 16 points, at 41-25, at the end of three frames as Robertson continued his productive evening with eight more points.

The inside combo of Robertson and Frost guided Gulfport to the win on the night, as Robertson tallied a game-high 23 points and Frost chipped in 20 points.
Logan Robinson led West Harrison with 12 points and Ja’Marcus McCaleb added 10 points for the Hurricanes, while Hayden Boggs had nine points.

Both teams remain in region play Friday night, as Gulfport faces D’Iberville and West Harrison meets Ocean Springs as the second round of league play begins. The upcoming region tournament, which Gulfport hosted and won last year, will take place in D’Iberville next month.
