OCEAN SPRINGS — Hancock senior standout Brooklyn Cuevas celebrated a career milestone in scoring last week.
Tuesday night, she showed home-standing Ocean Springs exactly why she accomplished that feat.
Cuevas, a recent William Carey signee, fired in a game-high 18 points, all coming on six 3-point shots in just the first three quarters of play, as her and her Lady Hawks rolled to an impressive 53-21 win over the Lady Greyhounds at Hubbard Gymnasium on the OSHS campus.
The win kept Hancock unbeaten at 8-0 on the young campaign.

Cuevas and her teammates were coming off a 53-39 win over yet another Class 7A school D’Iberville Friday night, a game in which Cuevas surpassed the prestigious 1,000 points scored in a career mark.
“Brooklyn had a great night shooting the ball as well being the floor leader for our team,” Hancock head coach Jamie Sisco said. “We obviously have a goal to win the 6A state championship in March and her leadership on and off the court really helps our chances I think. The work she has put in to be the best version of herself is incredible.”
Both Cuevas and Ambriel Smith tallied six points apiece in the first quarter Tuesday night to get Hancock off to a fast start and the Lady Hawks proceeded to take a commanding 24-4 lead entering the second stanza.

After nailing a pair of treys in the first frame, Cuevas drained three more in the second stanza as the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Greyhounds 15-5 to take a 39-9 lead into intermission and the game was basically over.
“Our defensive pressure and transition offense really got us going early tonight. When you play with a lead things seem to come easier,” Cisco added. “We have really stressed getting the best shot possible, not necessarily the open shot lately. I was extremely proud of how we shared the ball and made the extra pass to the open person tonight.”

The win for Hancock was the third straight for the Lady Hawks over Region 7-4A competition in the past week that started with a 48-36 road win over home-standing St. Martin.
Next up for the Hancock girls is a return home to open Region 4-6A action against George County Friday night in the Kiln.
Starr Jackson was one of only two Ocean Springs players that scored, and she led the Lady Greyhounds with 15 points. However, 11 of those points came in the fourth quarter, when most of the Hancock starters had made their way to the bench to rest for the remainder of the game.
