After 14 games, the Moss Point boys basketball team will finally get into Region 8-4A action Monday on the road in Leakesville against Greene County.
The Tigers have gotten off to a fairly successful start in the post Kendrick Osby era, as they have an 8-6 record entering league play after a 46-36 home win over West Harrison Friday night.
Moss Point has won three straight games and four of its last five contests. The Tigers are 4-2 in the month of December.
The Tigers started their current three-game win streak with a big 66-38 win over Columbia one week ago Saturday in D’Iberville at the annual Rene Ladner Classic. Moss Point got an impressive performance from senior standout Quey’Sean Taylor as he poured in a game-high 30 points to lead the way in the win for MPHS. Jujuan Nettles chipped in 11 points to the winning cause for the Tigers.

Moss Point followed that up with a close 48-45 win over visiting Alma Bryant (Ala.) Tuesday, before the win over the Hurricanes three days later to wrap up pre-region play. “We have won 4 out of our last 5. I feel like we’re starting to settle into our roles and we have to clean up some mental lapses on defense but I feel like we’re on the right track going into district play.” Moss Point head coach Daryl Osby said Sunday.
In the win over West Harrison, Alejandro Montalvo tallied 20 points to pace the Tigers to the win.
The trip to Leakesville Monday to tip off Region 8-4A play begins a busy stretch of action this week for the Tigers as they’ll play three games in five days before taking a break for Christmas. After facing the Wildcats, Moss Point will host D’Iberville on Thursday and then travel to Bay Springs on Friday.

After a brief break for Christman, Moss Point will travel to Jackson next week for a three-day holiday tournament at Lanier High School. The Tigers are slated to open play in that event with a game against Jackson Wingfield.
Greene County, also 8-6 overall, is on a four-game win streak as the Wildcats await Moss Point’s visit on Monday. Over the weekend, the Wildcats won the Richton Rotary Tournament after three straight wins in the event capped by a 55-47 win over the host Rebels Saturday night. It marked the third straight year that Greene Couty captured the title in that annual event.

Also in Region 8-4A action over the weekend, Pass Christian traveled to Orlando, Fla., for a three-day tourney and the Pirates came home empty-handed from the KSA Events Classic Basketball Tournament after three close losses.
Pass Christian opened play on Thursday with a 56-51 loss to Copper Hills High out of West Jordan, Utah. That dropped the Pirates into the consolation bracket where they lost to North Alleghany, Pa., on Friday 43-40.
Finally, Pass Christian fell in the seventh place game 54-50 to Wayne High of Rochester, N.Y., to finish winless in the event and also drop to 8-6 overall on the year.
Elsewhere, Bay High and Poplarville began Region 8-4A play last week as the Tigers topped the Hornets 56-33 on the road. Despite being just 2-1 overall, Bay High is the only team of the five that reside in Region 8-4A with a league win so far.
