The St. Martin Lady Yellow Jackets are coming off a 15-day layoff and have won eight out of their last nine games including three straight wins in three consecutive days going into the Christmas break.
“It’s always tough the first game back,” St. Martin second year head coach Jason Kennedy said. “Playing a team like Moss point in that return game makes it even more difficult. They are well coached and they make you execute and defensively they are very disciplined. We have had a couple of very tough practices the last few days, so I’m excited to see how we come out and respond.”
The St. Martin boys are coming off of splitting a pair of games in The Pearl River Central Christmas Tournament last week. The Yellow Jackets ended play in the event with a 66-35 victory over Poplarville Friday. Tony Mora poured in a game-high 20 points and also had seven steals and three assists. R. J. Ratliff added 13 points to the winning effort, while Ty’Lah Whitlock added nine points and seven rebounds and Kai Viera had eight points and seven rebounds as well for SMHS.
In the other Region 8-4A game Friday night, Poplarville hosts Pass Christian in a pair of games as the Pirates look to move to 2-0 in league play as well and the Lady Pirates look for their first win in the region race.
The 57-34 win over Bay High Wednesday night at the Tigerdome for the Pirates marked the 600th career win for veteran Pass High coach Buddy Kennedy at the helm of the Pass.
L.J. Jaynes led Pass High with 12 points, followed by Necaise and Patton with 11 points each. Anthony Robinson led the Tigers’ scoring with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Both Poplarville teams stand 0-2 in league play and look to avoid 0-3 starts.
