GULFPORT — The annual Battle at the Beach on the softball side kicked off at two different sites on Thursday with quite a few “Southern Six” squads in action.
The featured match of the opening day of play came here as home-standing Gulfport hosted region rival Ocean Springs in a non-league affair, and the Lady Greyhounds pulled out a 7-5 win.

Thanks to a three run second stanza that erased a brief 1-0 Gulfport lead and gave OSHS a lead it would never relinquish, the Lady Greyhounds went on to steadily stretch out its advantage to 7-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning before the Lady Admirals rallied for three runs of their own in the final at bat.
But the five run deficit proved too much for the home team to overcome in the end, however,
Gracie McDonald paced OSHS at the plate wit two hits, including a triple, and she drove in a pair of runs while K’lee Gum had a game-high three hits and an RBI as well. Presley Newport had a pair of doubles in the winning effort and drove in a run, while Addison Johnson chipped in two singles and two RBIs also. Farrah James had a pair of hits including a double, while Brooklyn Peterson also had two singles.

Peterson went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for OSHS.

Gulfport’s Gabrielle Simmons had a double and drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Admirals in the loss.

Caroline Woodward took the loss.
In another one of the featured contests of day one of BATB play Thursday, St. Martin dispatched home-standing Biloxi 13-5 at The Biloxi Sports Complex.
Madalynn Broussard led the Lady Yellow Jackets at the plate with a game-high three hits including a triple and she drove in a pair of runs as well. Kiyara Lee added a pair of runs and two RBI’s to the winning effort, while Mia Boney and Emma Claire Elmore drove in a pair of runs apiece for SMHS and Lily Radich added a run-scoring double.
Miranda Ladner picked u the pitching win, while Savannah Terrell finished up for the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Play expands to St. Martin as well Friday as all three sites will see several games played over the next two days to wrap up play in the softball version of the BATB.
