It’s another week of league play in the “Southern Six” as all seven classifications will be involved in their respective region races.

Getting to Trustmark Park in Pearl is the ultimate goal for every prep baseball player on every team in the state of Mississippi when the season tips off. And playing well in region action and earning a top four seed is the first step.

Each week until the overall state tournament starts in mid-May, SouthMiss6 Sports will be the place to be to keep up with the most complete and comprehensive info about all things prep baseball featuring stories, player features and photos in the “Southern Six” counties of the state of Mississippi.

Each week, on Monday, we will take a look at at least five players and five games to keep an eye on as well as release our weekly “Super 7 in the Southern 6 Polls”.

Around the Diamond in the “Southern 6”

This week’s “Around the Diamond in the Southern 6” players list is comprised of some of the top single game performances by standouts that came up big for their respective teams in prep baseball last week. 

  1. Conner Tice, Stone — In Region 4-5A play Tuesday night, the Tomcats opened league play with a 10-run mercy rule 15-5 win over Wayne County. Tice, fresh off his duties as the Stone starting quarterback on the football field, wielded the big stick for the Tomcats in the five inning game as he smashed a grand slam in fourth frame and added a run-scoring double as well as he finished with a game-high five RBIs.
  2. Jaxson Knight, Hancock — In a 7-1 Region 4-6A win over Long Beach Tuesday, Knight carried the big bat on the night for Hancock as he cracked three doubles and drove in a game-high three runs. 
  3. Hunter Harper, Vancleave — In a big 13-5 home win over arch-rival East Central Saturday, Harper collected a pair of hits apiece for the Bulldogs in the winning 12-hit effort, including a double and he had a game-high five RBIs.
  4. Maddox Moreland, Ocean Springs — Moreland registered a pair of hits including a double Saturday and he drove in a game-high four runs as the Greyhound completed a three game sweep of Biloxi in Region 4-7A play. The outing capped off a big week at the plate for him as he also smacked a key three-run home run in the 4-1 OSHS win on Tuesday giving him seven RBIs on the week.
  5. Nico Williams, Gulfport — On Wednesday night, Williams earned the win on the mound in a 9-0 decision over D’Iberville in the Region 4-7A opener for both teams. He threw the first four frames in a combined one-hitter. He also drove in three runs in the series.
  6. Carter McCammon, Resurrection — In a 15-2 Region 8-1A road win over Salem, McCammon registered game-highs in both hits with three and RBIs with five and he hit a home run. McCammon started and picked up the pitching win with four innings of work on the mound as well.

This Week’s Games:

  1. Poplarville at Moss Point — Monday at Gautier in the first game of a two game Region 8-4A series.
  2. St. Stanislaus at St. Patrick — Tuesday in the first game of a two-game Region 8-3A series.
  3. Biloxi at Gulfport — Tuesday in the first game of a three game Region 4-7A series.
  4. St. Martin at Ocean Springs — Thursday in the first game of a three game Region 4-7A series.
  5. Hancock at Pascagoula — Thursday in the second game of a three game Region 4-6A series.
  6. Vancleave at Gautier — Friday at 1 p.m., in the third game of a three game Region 4-5A series.
  7. Stone at East Central — Saturday at 1:oo p.m., in the third game of a three game Region 4-5A series.
