Poplarville clinched the top seed in Region 8-4A Tuesday night.
The Hornets moved to 6-1 in the region race with an 8-7 win over visiting Greene County. The win assures Poplarville of home-field advantage in the opening round of the upcoming Class 4A South State playoffs in a couple of weeks.
Also in Region 8-4A play on Tuesday night, Bay High beat Moss Point in Gautier 18-0 in just four innings. Bay High, the only team to beat Poplarville in league play, sits at 3-2 in the region race and has its sights set on the second seed and home-field advantage in the first round of the postseason as well.


Braden Necaise drove in a game-high four runs for Bay High, while Xander Ladner had two hits and three RBIs and Paul Verdin had a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs as well in the winning effort. Ladner had a double and Walker Seymour had a triple for Bay.
Seymour started on the hill and picked up the win, as MPHS managed no hits in the game. Aiden Evans was the losing pitcher.
Both teams are set to meet again in Bay St. Louis on Friday.
In that Poplarville win on Tuesday night, Emile Pace cracked a solo home run for the Hornets while Chase Sones had a two-run double and Zach Case added a two-run single to the winning effort. Brock Sheppard chipped in a pair of hits for PHS also.


Aiden Smith picked up the win in relief when the Hornets rallied from a 7-3 deficit for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win.
The two teams are set to meet again in Leakesville Friday night in game two of the series.
Also this week, Pass Christian is stepping out of Region 8-4A play to meet St. Patrick as the Fighting Irish also are off from Region 8-3A action.
The teams started a two-game, home and home series Tuesday night as St. Patrick took a 12-4 road win.
John Hay smashed a three-run home run for the Fighting Irish and Bennett Rimes added a three run double, while Carson Kilpatrick had a pair of hits including a double and drove in two runs also. Ayden Lee had two hits, including a double, in the winning effort and drove in a run as well.
Cooper Mercir pitched three innings to pick up the win.
Wes Jolley had a run-scoring double for the Pirates. Braden Necaise took the loss on the hill.
The same two teams are slated to meet again Friday night in Biloxi at SPHS.
