Around the Diamond in the “Southern 6”

This week’s “Around the Diamond in the Southern 6” players list is comprised of some of the top single game performances by standouts that came up big for their respective teams in the ninth annual Battle at the Beach last week.

  1. Jaxson Moore, Harrison Central — The Red Rebels beat league-leading Ocean Springs for the second time in three games Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Greyhounds 2-0 behind a complete game three hitter from Jaxson Moore. Moore was still dealing zeroes all across the board at the Greyhounds as he went the distance allowing just three singles and striking out eight while walking none in his best outing of the season. The Greyhounds got two base runners on in the same inning just once, in the bottom of the fifth, but Moore responded with back-to-back strike outs to end the threat.
  2. Logan Fontenell, Biloxi —  Biloxi moved into sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot for the first time this season in Region 4-7A play Saturday afternoon as the Indian completed a three game sweep of neighboring rival D’Iberville with an 8-5 win over the Warriors. Fontenelle had two hits, including a home run, and he drove in three runs in the win.
  3. Carter McCammon, Resurrection — Resurrection captured its seventh consecutive Region 8-1A title Friday night, as the Eagles went to Brookhaven and beat Enterprise-Lincoln 5-4 in a key league encounter to move to a perfect 10-0 this season in the region race. Resurrection jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI-single from McCammon and then after the Yellow Jackets tied things up with two runs of their own he had a run-scoring sacrifice fly to help make it 4-2. McCammon tossed the first four frames on the mound to earn the win.
  4. Conner Dyess, Pearl River Central — Pearl River Central took a huge step toward taking the top seed in Region 3-6A Friday night as the Blue Devils shutout West Jones in the rubber match of that three game league series 6-0 to move back into sole possession of first place in the region race. Dyess was in complete control on the mound as he twirled the complete game, four-hit whitewash of the Mustangs striking out five and walking three to earn the win.
  5. Cayler Havard, George County—  On Friday night, Havard’s walk-off run-scoring double provided the winning run with one out in the eighth inning at Claude Passeau Field just as Picayune was on the verge of really taking control of the region race. It propelled the Rebels to a pair of wins in an 18 hour period over the league-leading Maroon Tide.
