Week two of the prep football season yielded some interesting results across the “Southern Six”, so it’s time for our second installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season on Sunday we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week.

Here are 7 things in the “Southern 6” we noticed Friday night:

1. Runnin’ Rebels — George County moved to 2-0 for the second straight season with a 51-36 romp past arch-rival Greene County in the “Battle for the Bell” at Gill-Martin Stadium in Lucedale. The Rebels also started last season with comfortable wins over both East Central and the Wildcats, and this marks the first time in eight years since the 2015-2016 seasons that George County has started off 2-0 in back-to-back campaigns. The Rebels got a blistering performance from standout senior signal-caller Deuce Knight in the first half, as he completed 12 out of 16 passes for 301 yards and five touchdowns in the first two quarters alone and guided his squad to a 51-14 halftime lead that it would never relinquish.
2. Grounded Greyhounds — On the other end of the spectrum, Ocean Springs is off to an 0-2 start to a season for the first time in five years after the Greyhounds fell on the road to defending Class 7A state champion Oak Grove Friday night. The Greyhounds had the Warriors reeling a bit in the second half taking a 21-14 lead in the third quarter behind junior running back Sharroid Whitehead, who dashed and darted for 177 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard scamper to cap a 21-0 Greyhound run and put OSHS ahead 21-14 in the third quarter. But Oak Grove rallied behind their defense and a stout ground game to answer with a 21-0 run of its own to close out the game. This marks the first time since 2019, when OSHS fell to Ridgeland and Pascagoula in back-to-back weeks, that the Greyhounds sit at 0-2 entering the third week of the season.
3. Panther Power — Yet again on the other end of the spectrum, Pascagoula moved to 2-0 as well for the second straight season with a hard-fought 27-14 win over a scrappy bunch from East Central. The Panthers jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead and extended that advantage to 15-0 mid-way through the third quarter, before the Hornets came alive in the fourth frame to close the gap to just one point at 15-14. But PHS responded immediately with two touchdowns over the next four minutes to close out the game and secure the win over ECHS for the second straight season. The Panthers won 34-7 in Hurley in week two last season.
4. Plundering Pirates — Pass Christian, which entered the season coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history last year, bounced back from a season-opening loss on the road at Long Beach with an easy 48-9 road win over Purvis. Thanks to several scoring runs from senior tailback Jacquez Alexander Dedeaux, the Pirates jumped out to a commanding 34-9 halftime lead over the Tornadoes and coasted to the win to move to 1-1 on the season.
5. Waltzing Warriors — D’Iberville danced its way to its second 2-0 start since 2021 with a comfortable 33-22 win over visiting Gautier in the first game of the season at Buddy Singleton Field for the Warriors. The Warriors jumped out to a 21-6 lead after the first half, in a game played at times in a torrential downpour, thanks to a pair of short scores within a short period of time late in the first period. Andre Crosby paced the winning ground game for DHS with 16 carries for 122 yards and one touchdown.
6. Turning Tide — Picayune also bounced back from a season-opening loss to powerful Brandon with an impressive 35-0 win over visiting Slidell Northshore at Lee-Triplett Stadium. The Maroon Tide tallied two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters to take a commanding 28-0 lead into halftime over the visiting Panthers from just across the state line and coasted to the win to even up their record at 1-1. Picayune senior running back ruhed for over 200 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
7. Admirals Sail — Yet another “Southern Six” squad sailed off to a quick 2-0 start to the season as Gulfport squashed home-standing Vancleave 35-0. Admirals quarterback Dane Sullivan threw for four touchdown passes in the win, as Gulfport bounced the Bulldogs in comfortable fashion for the second straight season. It marked the first trip ever in football for Gulfport to Vancleave, and just the second meeting ever all-time between the teams affer the 42-0 GHS home win last season.
