LUCEDALE — Vancleave began the game with a field goal and ended it with one as well Friday night against home-standing George County.
And both boots proved to be important as the Bulldogs upset the Rebels 27-24.
Vancleave moved to 2-2 on the season with its second straight win, and George County fell to the same mark with its second straight loss as the Rebels once again played with senior standouts Deuce Knight and Brenn Moody.
The Bulldog’s would score their first points of the night on Jordyn Raynor 26-yard field goal with 34 seconds remaining in the first quarter, and their final points of the game came on a 33-yard field goal by Scottie Toothman with 3:26 remaining in the game to clinch the three point win.

The game would see several lead changes as the majority of the game was played with a one score difference between the two teams.
George County would waste no time getting on the board to begin the game. After a two yard loss on the game’s first play, Rebel running back Branden Gautier would rumble 70 yards for a touchdown with 11:15 remaining in the opening frame to make it 6-0.
Vancleave would answer with the kick from Raynor to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.
George County matched that boot as Layton Fryfogle nailed a 41-yard field goal with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter for a 9-3 George County lead.
George County would gain their largest lead of the game with 4:43 remaining in the second quarter at 17-3 after a one yard touchdown rush by quarterback Kohl Bradley followed by a successful two point try from Gautier.

With a mere :28 seconds remaining in the first half, Vancleave’s sophomore fullback Devin Knight would score a touchdown from two yards out and Raynor’s point-after made it 17-10 at halftime.
Vancleave would receive the second half kickoff and tie the game at 17-17 on a 38-yard Kyle Capers touchdown gallop with 8:43 remaining in the third quarter.
George County head coach James Ray would begin playing Wyatt Spidahl at quarterback in the second half as well as starter Bradley and Spidahl would connect with Montrell Dortch on a 33-yard touchdown strike as the Rebels regained the lead at 24-17 after another Fryfogle PAT.
Vancleave would outscore George County 10-0 in the final quarter to pull off the victory.
At the 11:18 mark of the fourth quarter, Kyle Capers would rumble 25-yards for the touchdown followed by another Raynor PAT to tie the game 24-24.
On the game’s final scoring drive, Vancleave would take over possession at midfield following a turnover on downs. On first down, Vancleave junior quarterback Reece Thomason would find senior receiver Martin Shaw wide open in the middle of the field to set up the Bulldogs in field goal range.

With 3:26 remaining in the game, the Vancleave drive would reach the sixteen yard line and head coach Kevin Fant would call on Scottie Toothman for the game-winning kick.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jordyn Raynor would drop in a perfect pooch kick recovered by the Bulldogs who would then run out the clock on the homestanding Rebels.
Vancleave’s Hunter Harper carried 22 times for 134 yards and Capers added 15 runs for 119 yards to th winning effort.
Vancleave will travel to the Kiln next Friday night to face Hancock, while George County will head to Waynesboro to meet Wayne County.
