As the prep football season across South Mississippi heads towards the beginning of October, it’s time for our sixth installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season on Sunday we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

  1. Shipwrecked Admirals — Coming off a rousing road win over perennial state power Picayune, Gulfport returned home to historic Milner Stadium to welcome in yet another solid foe in Brandon. But boy, what a difference a week made for the Admirals. The Bulldogs completely dominated Gulfport in a 42-0 thumping, dropping GHS to 3-2 overall entering its open week. Brandon also opened the season by hanging 60 points on home-standing Picayune. The outcome from the Admirals didn’t bode well for Region 4-7A teams heading into the postseason later this year against opponents from Region 3-7A once again this year.
  2. Maroon Made — And speaking of Picayune, the Maroon Tide bounced back from that home loss to Gulfport with a strong outing against home-standing Ocean Springs to pull out an exciting 38-35 win at Greyhound Stadium. Picayune senior standout tailback Darrell Smith, a Louisiana-Lafayette commit, ran for almost 300 yards and four touchdowns in propelling Picayune to the win. The Maroon Tide moves to 3-2 on the season, while Ocean Spring falls to 1-4 with an open week coming up. It marks the first 1-4 start to a season for the Greyhounds since 2002, when they finished 1-9 overall.
  3. Prowling Panthers — Pascagoula is off to a solid 4-1 start for the second straight season after the Panthers pummeled visiting Biloxi 44-3. The contest marked the 100th all-time meeting between the two teams on the gridiron, and it was Pascagoula’s second straight win over Biloxi and the Panthers have won three of the last four meetings over the past four seasons. Pascagoula senior quarterback Silas Corder, a Southern Miss commit, completed 21-of-27 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns in the win heading into an open date for both teams.
  4. Streak Snapped — Pearl River Central stopped a 17-game losing streak with a 56-35 win over Bay High to spoil Homecoming for the Tigers. The Blue Devils balanced offensive attack put up 21 points in the second quarter and 14 points in each of the third and fourth quarters as they pulled away from the Tigers, who had kept the game close early. Blue Devil quarterback Qorday Russell accounted for right at 400 yards of total offense and all eight touchdowns, as he threw for four and ran for four more.
  5. Streak Snapped (Part 2) — It took a couple of years, but St. Martin. finally won another game on the road after a lengthy hiatus The Yellow Jackets stopped home-standing East Central 15-7 at Shirley Stadium, to move to 3-2 overall on the season. St. Martin, which snapped a 17-game overall losing streak with a 24-14 win over visiting Vancleave to start the season, now heads toward an open date next week after the win in the all-Jackson County showdown. It also marks the first time in two years, since the Yellow Jackets opened head coach Ty Smith’s first year at 3-1, that SMHS has been over the .500 mark in a campaign. Meanwhile, the Hornets have hit hard times over the past two seasons, managing just four wins with 11 losses since the beginning of last year.
  6. Hurricane Warning —  Don’t look now, but suddenly surging West Harrison has won four straight games. The Hurricanes stormed into Dantzler Stadium and blew away home-standing Moss Point 48-13 on Homecoming night for the Tigers Friday night. West Harrison stands 4-1 for the third straight season, while Moss Point drops to 0-5 overall. West Harrison scored on seven of its first eight possessions of the game, taking a 48-6 halftime lead in the process and breezed to the win. Hurricanes running back Jordan Stapleton scored four rushing touchdowns in the winning effort as WHHS scored 48 unanswered points after falling behind 6-0 early in the game.
  7. Eagles Soar —  Suddenly, Resurrection has won two straight games. The Eagles took a 14-0 lead early in the second half, and held off a late fourth quarter rally by home-standing St. Patrick Friday night to secure their second straight win on the season after starting the season with an 0-3 mark. The Eagles jumped out to that aforementioned two touchdown advantage thanks to an 11-yard scoring run by tailback Eric Fox in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Then, with that same score, Jase Walker doubled the RCS lead in the third quarter on a 7-yard scoring run. Dillion Callahan was perfect on both extra point tries for RCS, which proved to be critical as the game played out.
