PASCAGOULA — The state prep volleyball playoffs began on Saturday for the four smallest classifications and there was plenty of success for several “Southern Six” squads.
In Class 1A, home-standing Resurrection swept Shaw 3-0 to move on to the second round of the Class 1A South State playoffs. Next up, the Lady Eagles will host Noxapater in round two Tuesday night.
In Class 3A, both Region 8-3A rivals in OLA and St. Patrick moved on with big wins as the two-time defending state champion Crescents swept visiting Southeast Lauderdale 3-0 while the Lady Irish went on the road and pulled off a big five set upset of home-standing Choctaw Central winning 3-2.
Now, on Tuesday in the Class 3A South State playoffs second round, OLA remains at home to host Jefferson Davis County while St. Patrick stays on the road with a trip to Seminary.

In Class 4A, a trio of Region 8-4A foes all moved on to the second round of the Class 4A South State playoffs with wins on Saturday.
Poplarville, the top seed from the region, swept visiting Forest 3-0 while home-standing Bay High, the second seed, swept Quitman 3-0. Also, Pass Christian, the third seed from the region, went on the road and swept Morton 3-0 to move on as well.
On Tuesday, in the second round, the Lady Pirates remain on the road and head to Jackson to face Lanier High while Poplarville is back at home to host Sumrall and Bay High heads to Purvis.

The three larger classifications, Class 5A-Class 7A, all get the postseason started on Tuesday as well.
In the opening round of the Class 5A South State playoffs, Region 4-5A champ Vancleave hosts Natchez and second seed East Central takes on visiting Brookhaven. Meanwhile Gautier, the third seed from Region 4-5A, heads to Florence.
In the opening round of the Class 6A South State playoffs, Region 4-6A champ Hancock takes on visiting Terry while second seed George County hosts Pearl River Central. Third seed West Harrison heads to Hattiesburg while fourth seed Long Beach travels to West Jones.
In the opening round of the Class 7A South State playoffs, Region 4-7A champ Ocean Springs hosts Petal and second seed Gulfport takes on visiting Oak Grove. Third seed Harrison Central heads to Northwest Rankin and fourth seed D’Iberville visits Brandon.

After the dust settles on Tuesday, the South State championship matches for all seven classifications are set for the following Monday, Oct. 14th, with the state championships set for Oct. 17-18 at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton on the campus of Mississippi College.
