D’IBERVILLE — Ocean Springs didn’t fare very well in the pre-region portion of its schedule, managing just one win in five outings.
But, just like over the past three seasons, when the games that count in the league standings begin, the Greyhounds showed up and showed out.
Visiting Ocean Springs took down D’Iberville 27-13 in the Region 4-7A opener for both teams Friday night. With the win, the Greyhounds move to 2-4 overall while the Warriors drop to an even 3-3 on the campaign. Ocean Springs has won the past three region titles.

D’Iberville was looking to get off to a 1-0 start in region play for the first time in three years, and also for the first time ever under the direction of third-year head coach Josh Ladner. And to that point, the Warriors jumped out to a quick 7-0 on their first possession as Andre Crosby sprinted 40-yards to pay dirt to put his team ahead.
But that score just seemed to wake the Greyhounds up.
Later in the first frame, Ocean Springs tailback Will Smith took a handoff from quarterback Sharroid Whitehead and scored from six yards out to make it 7-6 after a missed point after at the 3:04 mark.
As the second stanza unfolded, the Greyhounds showed they wouldn’t be denied tallying 18 straight points to take a 24-7 lead into halftime.

Whitehead gave OSHS its first lead of the night and also one it wouldn’t relinquish when he scored on a short run to make it 12-7 at the 9:49 mark. Placekicker Peyton Williams then took a pitch on the PAT try and rambled in for the two point conversion to make it 14-7.
And Whitehead wasn’t finished. He then hooked up with wide out Nolan Wells on a scoring pass just over three minutes later, and the PAT by Williams made it 21-7 with Greyhounds at the mid-way point of the period.
But Williams wasn’t finished. He nailed a 42-yard field goal in the waning moments of the first half and suddenly OSHS took a commanding 24-7 lead into intermission.

Williams then completed a 27-point unanswered streak for the Greyhounds with another field goal early in the third frame to make it 27-7.
D’Iberville finally got back on the board with a 25-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jordan Walley to Keilan Stepter to complete the scoring.
