As the prep football season across South Mississippi prepares for Halloween and then the month of November, it’s time for our 10th installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season on Sunday we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

  1. Rising Tide — Home-standing Picayune jumped out to a quick and commanding 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 49-7 win over Long Beach at Lee-Triplett Stadium. Head coach Cody Stogner’s crew stayed perfect in the region race at 3-0, and the Maroon Tide stand 7-2 overall. Brandon Parker accounted for two touchdowns in the winning effort for the home team. From his quarterback spot, Parker hit Allan Magee on a 9-yard touchdown toss and from his spot in the secondary Parker picked off an errant Bearcat pass an returned it for a touchdown as well. Darrell Smith scored on a 7-yard run and B.J. Ducre added an 11-yard scoring dash while Triston Cooper had a 33-yard scoring scamper for Picayune as well.
  2. Rebel Yell — George County went on the road to West Harrison and handed the Hurricanes a 68-49 loss in Region 4-6A action. The win moves the Rebels to 3-0 as well in Region 4-6A, and George County is 6-3 overall. This sets up the battle for supremacy in the region next week in Picayune when the Maroon Tide hosts the Rebels. George County senior standout signal-caller Deuce Knight, an Auburn commit, accounted for nine of the 10 touchdowns on the night for the Rebels as he threw for seven scores and ran for two more. He also ran for a two-point conversion.
  3. Revived Warriors — Home-standing D’Iberville stayed alive in the chase for the upcoming Class 7A South State playoffs with its first Region 4-7A win of the season Friday night. The Warriors whacked visiting Harrison Central 31-0 to move to 1-2 in the region race and even at 4-4 overall. The Red Rebels are also at 1-2 in league play and sit at 2-6 overall. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Walley was 12-of-18 through the air for 180 yards and a trio of touchdown passes in the winning effort. All of Walley’s scoring passes came in the first half and gave the Warriors a commanding 21-0 lead.
  4. Bold Bulldogs — Home-standing Vancleave decided that the annual Homecoming contest would be an historical one this year as the Bulldogs hosted perennial state power for the first time ever. Then, veteran head coach Kevin Fant’s crew decided to take it even one step further. The Bulldogs registered their first-ever win over the Golden Tornadoes with an exciting 41-33 shootout decision Friday night in Region 4-5A play. With the win, Vancleave moves to 2-1 in the region race and Laurel, the defending Class 5A South State champions, drops to 1-2. The Bulldogs are 5-3 overall and the ‘Naders sit at 2-7. Hunter Hunter and Kyle Capers combined to form a force on the ground that wreaked havoc on the Laurel defense accounting for 347 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Capers tallied a game-high 232 yards on the ground with Harper adding 115.
  5. QB 1 — The Trey Irving Show continued for Gautier Friday night. And the senior stand-out signal-caller has his Gators on the verge of a historic milestone. The senior standout signal-caller accounted for four of Gautier’s five touchdowns as the Gators bounced by home-standing East Central 35-21 in workman-like fashion at Shirley Stadium in Region 4-5A play. The win kept the Gators perfect in the league standings at 3-0 and Gautier now stands 7-1 overall. The decision leaves Gautier one win away next week against Stone from securing its first region championship in 16 years.
  6. In A Row? — Ocean Springs turned a slight 14-7 first half lead into a 34-14 win with a pretty dominant second half performance against home-standing Biloxi, and in doing so the Greyhounds headed back across the bridge with their 22nd consecutive region win.. The decision moves the Greyhounds to 3-0 in Region 4-7A action and Biloxi drops to 1-2. Ocean Springs now prepares for a visit from Gulfport, and the Admirals also stand at 3-0 in the region race.
  7. High Tide — Those aforementioned Admirals stayed neck and neck with OSHS in the Region 4-7A standings with a 42-7 thumping of visiting St. Martin at historic Milner Stadium. Gulfport fell behind early 7-0, but simply responded with 42 unanswered points to move to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the loop. Quarterback Dane Sullivan threw for just over 260 yards and three touchdowns in the winning effort, while his backfield teammates Cooper Crosby and Dakorean Payton combined for over 300 yards of total offense and three scores as well.
