Home-standing Stone High jumped out to a 17-0 lead and held off a furious rally by Florence to slip past the Eagles 17-14 in the opening round of the Class 5A South State playoffs Friday night.

The win, that came at A.L. May Stadium on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, moves the Tomcats on to a second round date on the road at Brookhaven next week.

Stone stands at 6-5 overall and the season comes to an end for Florence at 6-4.

Also, In Columbia at Walter Payton Field, visiting Poplarville slipped past Columbia 21-20 Friday night. The Hornets will move on to host McComb next week. Poplarville is now 10-2 overall.
