GULFPORT — The first week of the new prep basketball season wasn’t very kind to the West Harrison boys.
But the winds of change blew a bit more favorable for the Hurricanes last week, including a big win in the home of the New Orleans Pelicans over a fellow “Southern Six” foe.
Head coach Jeff Norwood and his crew sit at 2-4 overall as WHHS prepares to host Harrison County rival D’Iberville Tuesday night. The season started slowly with three straight losses in the annual Pass Christian Tip-Off Tournament before they bounced back with two wins in the past three games.

Last week started off on Monday with a trip to New Orleans to face Gautier and WHHS pulled out a 46-40 win over the Gators prior to the Pelicans hosting the Brooklyn Nets.
Hurricane big man Keshawn Cook tallied 12 points to lead the way to the win, and he also added five rebounds while Jeremiah McWilliams added nine points and Jamarcus McCaleb chipped in eight points, six assists and three steals playing in the NBA venue. Logan Robinson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for WHHS also.

West Harrison then ended the week Friday night at home against Moss Point with a big 57-42 win over the visiting Tigers.
The 6-foot-7, 310-pound Cook once again paved the way to the win pouring in a game-high 24 points. Deandre Weston chipped in 12 points while Owen Reese added 11 points and five rebounds to the winning effort.
Those two wins were sandwiched around a close 51-47 loss on the road to Gulfport at Bert Jenkins Gymnasium on Thursday.
Cook had 12 points in that game, while McCaleb added 10 points, Robinson nine rebounds, Reese and Weston eight points apiece and Devin Gooden had eight boards.
The Hurricanes stand 2-4 so far as they await the arrival of the Warriors Tuesday night.
