ST. MARTIN — The best girls’ basketball team in St. Martin High School history record-wise started the 2005-2006 season off at a perfect 30-0.

The current crop of Lady Yellow Jackets is halfway to that amazing mark after picking up two wins over two days this weekend.

St. Martin moved to 15-0 overall with an easy 62-25 win over Pass Christian Saturday in the inaugural Lady Bulldog Invitational in Perkinston on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

“I’m extremely proud of this group-they love each other, and they are locked in.” third year SMHS head coach Jason Kennedy said, Sunday afternoon. “We are not focused on going undefeated we are just trying to improve with each and every game. At the end of the day, it’s not about the wins and losses it’s about the relationships we are building together.”

On Friday night, St. Martin moved to 3-0 in Region 4-7A play with a 49-36 win over home-standing Harrison Central.

Kylenn Ward tallied a game-high 17 points for SMHS, while Kennedi Jenkins chipped in 11 points to the winning effort and Yvette Nathan added 10 points.

Less than 24 hours later, the Lady Yellow Jackets also placed a trio of players in double digits as Kennedi Jenkins scored 12 points, Kylah Jenkins scored 11 points and Emma Chester added 10 points in the win over PCHS Saturday afternoon.

St. Martin is doing all of this with a fairly young group of players as Kennedy lost five seniors to graduation from last season each of which are now playing juco ball. He is also without what was expected to be his top returning player this season as junior guard Kaleah Lowery injured her knee over the summer and will be out all year.

“This group gives max effort and takes nothing for granted and I feel so blessed to be a part of their journey,” Kennedy concluded.

The Lady Yellow Jackets host Long Beach Tuesday night and then travel to Hancock for a huge game Friday night to wrap up the 2024 portion of their schedule.
