GULFPORT — Quite a few “Southern Six” senior standouts wrapped up their prep football careers here Saturday afternoon.

And quite a few of those local products did so in pretty good fashion.

A dirty dozen of 13 players from the “Southern Six” suited up for the South Squad in the 76th annual Bernard Blackwell North/South All-Star Football Classic here at historic Milner Stadium, as the North snapped a four game losing streak with 16-13 win.

The South now leads the all-time series 37-30-5.

The South led early in the game 7-0 and 13-7 at the end of the fist quarter, but the North dominated from there on out to pick up the win.

“The defense played their hearts out and got after it. Offensively we had a couple explosive plays but missed on a couple opportunites,” said South head coach Cory Reynolds of West Jones. “It was a great week with a lot of really good players from South Mississippi and some great coaches. It was a fun experience.”

Individually for the South squad, Pascagoula quarterback Silas Corder completed 3-of-7 passes for 96 yards. Corder made one of the biggest plays of the game to set up the South’s second score late in the first frame when he connected with Quitman’s Jaleil Cameron for a 76-yard pass play to the North’s 5-yard line. Oak Grove running back Kylin Champagne would close out the South’s scoring from one yard out two plays later.

Also in the passing department, Gautier quarterback Trey Irving completed four of eight passes for 48 yards.

George County wide out Brenn Moody had one catch for eight yards.

Defensively, West Harrison linebacker Josh Lane recorded seven total tackles while Pascagoula’s Sebastian Ford had five total stops including one tackle for loss. George County defensive back Kohl Bradley registered four total tackles, while fellow linebackers Fredrick Nicholson of Gautier and Coleman Gazzo of Biloxi made three stops each.

Also suiting up for the South squad Saturday were offensive lineman Deshawn Feazell of Moss Point, Brooks Martinez of Bay High and Dawson Kennedy of Pearl River Central as well as running back Trey Harris of West Harrison and defensive lineman Tyneke Davis of George County.

Moss Point’s Kevon Ford was also a member of the South team but he was out with an injury.

“It’s been a great week down here and a great opportunity to represent the state of Mississippi and the schools,” Reynolds concluded. “It was a great honor. We have some great coaches and a great group of kids. Not only great football players, great human beings that are going to be great fathers and great husbands and great workers. It’s been a great experience. Great weather and a great game today. The kids played hard, it was a fun game, and it’s something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”

It marked the 16th straight season the game took place in Gulfport.
