BILOX — This week’s “Baria Law Firm Game Ball of the Week” goes to Biloxi’s Zaniya Johnson as presented by SouthMiss6 Sports.

Every week throughout the end of the school year, we will honor student/athletes across the “Southern Six” with our “Game Ball of the Week” sponsored by David Baria, Attorney-Mediator.

Johnson, the super sophomore standout Dandy Dozen center, posted back-to-back double-doubles as the Lady Indians moved to a perfect 14-0 with a pair of wins in the Baton Rouge, La., area over the weekend. To wrap up play Saturday morning, Biloxi beat Baton Rouge Madison Prep 41-30 as Johnson posted 22 points and 14 rebounds On Friday night, Biloxi bounced home-standing Zachary, La., 46-20 with Johnson totaling 20 points and 11 boards.

Thanks in large part to the 6-foot-4 Johnson, Biloxi is the only remaining unbeaten girls team left in the “Southern Six” as we approach the flipping of the calendar to a new year.

In a battle of unbeatens last week, the Lady Indians dominated the visiting Hancock Lady Hawks with stellar post play from Johnson on the offensive end and intense ball pressure on the defensive end of the court on their way to a 41-24 win.

Armed with a commanding 35-14 lead at halftime, Johnson would score eight of her team’s 16 points in the third quarter as her teammates repeatedly got the ball to her near the basket. She would add another six points in the final quarter.

Recently, Johnson was named to the prestigious “Dandy Dozen” list produced by The Jackson Clarion-Ledger annually. She is the only sophomore named to the list this season, and just the third ever in the three decades since the list started.

Biloxi hosts its annual Lady Indian Christmas Classic beginning Friday. The Lady Indians face Wayne County at 1:30 p.m., in opening day action and then take on Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) on Saturday.
