BILOXI — The two “Southern Six” squads with the best records so far this season square off Tuesday night at The Biloxi Sports Arena in the “Sonic of South Mississippi Big Game of the Week.”

The game has been selected as the “Sonic of South Mississippi Big Game of the Week”.

The unbeaten Biloxi girls at 18-0 face off with visiting St. Martin at 17-1 as both teams resume Region 4-7A play. Both teams are coming off of their latest wins over the weekend, after the Lady Indians shut down perennial state power Jackson Callaway 45-40 in Pontotoc at the prestigious “Tangle on the Trail” while the Lady Yellow Jackets knocked off home-standing Moss Point 39-30 in the renewal of that Jackson County rivalry.

The win over the Lady Chargers Saturday for Biloxi was its second in the annual affair in less than 18 hours, after the Lady Indians knocked off Oak Grove (La.) 56-28 Friday night.

Against Jackson Callaway, Zaniya Johnson had 13 points and six rebounds while Aaliyah Davidson added eight points and Na’Kenya Terry scored seven points and pulled down eight rebounds.. Both Jayla Carriere and Aubrey Hill chipped in seven points apiece to the balanced scoring attack in the winning effort for the Lady Indians.

The loss overshadowed an impressive outing from Lady Charger guard JoJo Wilson, who poured in a game-high 25 points to go with six boards.

Jackson Callaway dropped to 15-3 with the loss.

Meanwhile, around the same time Saturday afternoon, St. Martin was registering its win over Moss Point in the first game for the Lady Yellow Jackets after a 15-day layoff.

After taking a a slight 6-4 lead after the first frame, visiting St. Martin rolled up 15 points in the second stanza en route to a commanding 21-9 double digit advantage at halftime and pushed on to a 39-30 win over Moss Point at Magnolia Middle School in a Saturday matinee affair.

Armed with that aforementioned slight two point lead after one quarter of play, St. Martin point guard Kylenn Ward took matters into her own hands, literally, as she sank a 3-point basket and registered 12 of the 15 points the Lady Yellow Jackets tallied in the period to steadily take control of the contest. Ward also had three field goals and a trio of free throws on her worksheet in the stanza.

Her play helped SMHS take a 21-9 lead into halftime, but she wasn’t quite finished just yet.

Ward continued her impressive work in the third frame, dropping in six more points and St. Martin took a 32-21 lead into the final period and proceeded to wrap up the win.

Ward tallied a game-high 19 points to lead the way for the Lady Yellow Jackets, which helped her team bounce back into the win column after suffering their first loss of the season to Hancock five days before Christmas.

Jordyn Ford had 14 points for Moss Point.

The win helped SMHS bounce back from its first loss of the season, a 45-38 win for Hancock on Dec. 20th.

Three days before that, Biloxi beat Hancock 41-24 at home.
