Each week until the first weekend in March at the overall state tournament in Jackson, SouthMiss6 Sports will be the place to be to keep up with the most complete and comprehensive info about all things prep basketball featuring stories and photos in the “Southern Six” counties of the state of Mississippi.

Each week we will take a look at at least five players and five games to keep an eye on as well as release our weekly “Super 7 in the Southern 6 Poll”.

Starting 5 in the “Southern 6

This week’s “Starting 5 in the Southern 6” players list is comprised of some of the area standouts that came up big for their respective teams so far this season.

1.  Max Baria, St. Stanislaus — The talented Rock-A-Chaw junior post player poured in a career-high (and game-high) 30 points to pace St. Stanislaus to a key 63-59 Region 8-3A overtime win on the road over West Marion Friday night.
2. Travor Frost, Gulfport — The Admiral standout center led his squad in scoring in back-to-back wins late last week with a game-high 19 points in a win over Picayune and 13 points in a win over Hancock as Gulfport bounced back in its first action after its first loss of the season.
3. Jayla Carriere , Biloxi— Carriere, an impressive sophomore swing guard/forward in her first year with the BHS program after transferring in from Harrison Central, stole the show in Biloxi’s 56-28 thumping of Oak Grove (La.) Friday as she tallied a team-high 17 points and posted a double-double with 10 points as well to lead the Lady Indians to the win in their first outing of the new year at the “Tangle on the Trail” in Pontotoc.
4. Juan Santiago, D’Iberville — The senior standout guard turned in a game-high 18-point worksheet Friday night on the road as his Warriors upset one of the then top-ranked teams in the state in a 50-40 win over Pascagoula.
5. Kylenn Ward, St. Martin — The stalwart junior point guard Ward tallied a game-high 19 points in her Lady Yellow Jackets’ 39-30 road win over Moss Point Saturday afternoon as St. Martin moved to a solid 17-1 with its first win of the new year.

2. Gulfport at Ocean Springs (boys ) — Tuesday at 7:30.
3. West Harrison at Pascagoula (girls) — Tuesday at 6:00.
4. Biloxi at Gulfport (boys) — Friday at 7:30 p.m.
5. Hancock at West Harrison (girls) — Friday at 7:30.
