OCEAN SPRINGS — Over the holidays, the Gulfport boys saw their season-opening 16 game win streak stopped.

Tuesday night though, the Admirals picked up right where they left off in Region 4-7A play before that first setback.

Gulfport stormed into Hubbard Gymnasium and sailed back home with a solid 62-46 win over Ocean Springs as each resumed the region race. The decision pushed the Admirals, under the direction of first year head coach Brian Butler, to an impressive 19-1 on the season and just as importantly to 4-0 in league play.

Meanwhile, the Greyhounds lost their fourth straight game and now sit 2-2 in Region 4-7A action and 8-10 overall.

““We pride ourselves in our preparation, so we feel like we’ve put the work in to become successful in reaching our region goals.” Butler said.

Denzel Jackson helped the visitors get off to a quick start with seven points, including a 3-pointer, in the first frame as Gulfport took a 13-9 lead heading into the second stanza.

Both Travor Frost and Markell Simmons had four points apiece in that period for the Admirals, as they steadily stretched their lead to double the deficit for OSHS at halftime 27-19.

The deficit would have been larger at intermission for OSHS if not for senior standout shooting guard Maddox Noblitt, who dropped in a pair of treys among his eight first half points.

Any hopes the Greyhounds had of a big second half comeback were quickly laid to rest by the Admirals as the third quarter unfolded. Jackson dropped in another 3-pointer as well as an old fashioned field goal for five points in the frame, while both Simmons and C.J. Burnham added four points apiece as GHS out-scored OSHS 18-8 to head into the final period with a commanding 45-27 advantage.

Jackson, Simmons and Frost combined to make up a solid triumvirate combination for Butler’s crew, as Jackson guided Gulfport to the win with 15 points while Simmons added 14 points and Frost chipped in 13 points to the winning effort.

For the Greyhounds, the Dandy Dozen selection Noblitt tallied a game-high 16 points including four treys while Jayvon Williams added nine points.

Both teams head back into region action on Friday night as Gulfport hosts arch-rival Biloxi and OSHS heads to Lyman to face home-standing Harrison Central.
