MOSS POINT — The Moss Point girls are unscathed through the first round of region play.

The home-standing Lady Tigers slipped past Bay High Friday night in overtime at Arthur Haynes Gym 31-28 in Region 8-4A action, moving to a perfect 4-0 in league play and 12-8 overall.

“It feels good to be 4-0 through the first round of district,” MPHS head coach Ethan Porter said. “This is something that this group of girls has not yet experienced. I’m proud of our effort and fight. Both games against Greene County and Bay High came down to the very end. Either team could’ve won both games. We have to stay hungry and humble because we have to play everybody again. How you handle success and how you handle failure says a lot about you. I’m interested to see how we handle ourselves moving forward.”

The game was knotted up at 25-25 entering the extra session Friday night. Landyn Johnson hit a 3-pointer in overtime for MPHS, while Jordyn Ford went two-for-two from the free throw line and Kirsten Bailey converted one of two shots from the charity stripe as well for the final point of the game for the home team.

Ford and Johnson had nine points apiece for Moss Point in the win, while Kaliyah Richardson added six points.

Moss Point begins the second half of league play with a trip to Leakesville and a re-match with Greene County Tuesday night. The Lady Tigers nipped the Lady Wildcats 35-34 a little over a month ago.

Lakeitha Sampson had nine points for Bay High in the loss to Moss Point, as head coach Kelton Thompson’s team dropped their first region game of the year. Bay High sits at 2-1 in the region race.

On Saturday, Thompson took his Bay High crew to Biloxi to face Mobile McGill-Toolen and fell to the Alabama squad 28-20 in the second game of the “Lady Indians Super Saturday Showdown”.

Asiah Thompson scored half of the points in the contest for the Lady Tigers as she finished up with 10 points and Bay High fell to 14-7 overall.

Bay High travels to Pass Christian to resume Region 8-4A play Wednesday night.
