WIGGINS — The East Central girls secured a berth in the upcoming Class 5A South State playoffs Tuesday night.
The Lady Hornets slipped past home-standing Stone 37-28 in the first game of the opening day here at the Region 4-5A Tournament taking place at Stone High.
The win moves ECHS into the semifinal round of the annual affair, where Laurel awaits at 4 p.m., Thursday afternoon, with a trip to the championship game on Friday night on the line.



Leading just slightly at 18-17 heading into the second half, East Central’s Makayla Thornton and Olivia Tanner each dropped in a 3-pointer apiece while Cambree Cumbest drained five-of-six free throws in the third frame as well and the Lady Hornets began to take control with a 30-21 advantage entering the final frame.
Stone’s Janiah Hartfield scored six points down the stretch, but the Lady Hornet countered with five points in the fourth period from Tanner to secure the win.



Both Cumbest and Tanner tallied 12 points apiece to led ECHS to the win, while Thornton chipped in nine points to the winning effort.
Hartfield scored a game-high 15 points for the Lady Tomcats, as they saw their season come to an end.
The Lady Hornets, who moved to 12-8 overall with the win, will have their hands full on Thursday with Laurel. the Lady ‘Naders stand an impressive 27-1 overall and went a perfect 10-0 in the region race this season.
Laurel, ranked as the top team in the state, handed ECHS a pair of decisive losses earlier this season winning 63-14 in Hurley and 70-29 at home.
