HATTIESBURG — Friday afternoon, the student body at Moss Point High started a four day break for Mardi Gras.

A few hours later, the mini vacay got off to a rough start for the Tiger baseball team.

Home-standing Hattiesburg mauled Moss Point 14-2 in just four innings Friday night. The loss drops the Jackson County band of Tigers to 3-4 overall this season, and it also ended a three game win streak for head coach Julius Bridges’ team.

The Tigers from the Hub City moved to even their mark up at 3-3 with the win.

Believe it or not, Moss Point took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Kevon Ford registered a run-scoring single. The hit scored Jonovan Thompson who had a one-out double.

But by the time the Tigers scored again, the home team had run off 12 straight runs to take complete command of the game.

Ford started and took the loss for MPHS.

Moss Point was coming off of a mercy rule win of their own on Tuesday night against Mobile Blount, 15-5 in five frames.

Ford had a two-run triple in that game, while Willie Hurd had two hits and drove in two runs as well. Hurd, Thompson and Jaxon Dubose all had a double apiece in the winning effort for the Tigers. Thompson had two hits also.

Aiden Evans started on the hill and picked up the win, working four frames while allowing just two hits to the Leopards and just one run while striking out 12 Blount batters.

Just a few days prior to that, Moss Point made its first trip here to Hattiesburg of two in less than a week and went home with an exciting 7-6 win over home-standing Sacred Heart.

The Tigers trailed 6-5 heading into the top of the seventh stanza before rallying for two runs to pull out the win.

In that decisive inning, Jevonte Penny singled to lead off and Ford followed with a game-tying RBI-double. Marcus Matthews then came up with a go-ahead run-scoring single to plate Ford for the 7-6 lead.

Thompson tossed almost three full innings of relief after to earn the pitching win after taking the hill in relief of Ford.

Evans had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers, while Penny and Ford both had two hits apiece as well in the win.
