Prep Baseball: Rock-A-Chaws slip past visiting Heritage Academy 4-2 Saturday afternoon

BAY ST. LOUIS — St. Stanislaus overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a four run rally over the middle three innings Saturday afternoon to slip past visiting Columbus Heritage Academy 4-2.

After the Patriots took a quick 1 -0 lead on Adyn Westmoreland’s RBI-single in the top of the first, the Rock-A-Chaws responded with two runs in the third frame plus a solo run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to steal the win.

Warren Gunter’s two-run single was the big blow in that third frame which gave SSC a lead it would never relinquish.

Sam Pike’s RBI-single made it 3-1 SSC in the fourth frame, and the count moved to 4-1 when pinch runner Lex Rhodes scored on a Patriot error in the fifth inning.

Heritage Academy added one last run in the top of the seventh stanza on a run-scoring ground out off the bat of Presley Gaskin.

Rock starting pitcher Wiley Mossy almost turned in a complete game worksheet in picking up the win, as he tossed six and 2/3rd innings scattering five hits while striking out two and walking two. He was responsible for both Pats runs.

Ayden Dartez came in to get the last out and record a save.

The Rocks only managed five hits themselves, with Stephen Huchison’s triple the big blow and Gunter’s two RBI’s a game-high.

The win helped SSC bounce back from a 5-4 loss in 10 innings on the road to perennial state power Oak Grove Friday night as it opens Region 8-3A play against Perry Central Tuesday night.

Cooper Long collected a pair of hits for Heritage Academy.

Long also took the loss on the hill, working five frames and allowing all four SSC runs.
