Here is our daily update as “Battle of the Beach” enters Day 6:
ST. MARTIN — Nine “Southern Six” squads hosted games in the annual “Battle at the Beach” Tuesday night.
And four of those teams picked up wins.
Ocean Springs beat St. John Neumann (Naples, Fla.) 3-0, Biloxi stopped Lafayette 5-3, Gulfport beat 10-6 and George County rallied late to nip Germantown 12-11.




On the other side of the ledger, Mooreville beat D’Iberville 7-0, Pope John Paul II (Slidell, La.,) popped Pascagoula 8-0, East Union clipped Hancock 8-5, Northwest Rankin slipped past Vancleave 11-8 and Spanish Fort (Ala.) thumped St. Martin 13-0.
In that last game, the visiting Toros overwhelmed the Yellow Jackets early and often and ended the contest after four frames with the 13-0 win.
Spanish Fort starting pitcher Newton Gardner dominated the St. Martin batters all night, or at least the short time that the game lasted, as he tossed a one-hit shutout striking out eight and walking none.
The only blemish on his worksheet was a single by Caleb Lawrence to lead off the bottom of the second stanza.




Nehemiah Hixon collected a pair of doubles and drove in two runs for the Toros in the winning 12-hit attack, while Grant Howard chipped in two hits including a double and drove in a pair of runs as well. Caleb Chesser added two hits, including a double, and Lakelon Ray had two hits as well while Branden Pegueros also had a double as well as. game-high three RBI’s.
Elsewhere in the “Southern Six”, Ocean Springs senior standout pitcher Jack Jordan hurled a masterpiece of his own against against St. John Neumann.
Jordan twirled a complete game shutout in the 3-0 Greyhound win, striking out seven and scattering five hits while walking none in picking up the win.
Ocean Springs broke open a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth frame to pull out the win when Justin San Miguel and Adam Clower both drove in runs and another run scored on an error off the bat of a ground ball by Jeremy Korn.
Also, Biloxi rallied for five runs in the fifth inning to overcome a slight 1-0 lead and take that 5-3 win over Lafayette.
Adam Rugg’s three-run triple cleared the bases for the big blow for Biloxi in that one. Shawn Miguel Gollott went the distance on the hill to take the in, striking out 11 in the process.




And, in Gulfport, the Admirals brought out the big bats and used the long ball in clipping Clinton 10-6.
Davis Ormes cracked a three-run home run, while both Cooper Crosby and Damion Burch added solo shots in the winning effort. Tolar Raybourn collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a game-high three RBIS and James Van Slyke had a double as well.
Carter Carriere, one of four GHS pitchers, picked up the win.
Meanwhile, in Lucedale, George County was on the verge of losing not only its fourth straight game but getting run-ruled as well trailing 10-0 to Germantown entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
But the Rebels responded with nine runs in that at bat and three more in the sixth stanza to pull out the almost inexplicable 12-11 win while managing only one extra base hit in the process.
Tripp Lightsey had two hits, including. double, and drove in two runs for the Rebels while Grant Reeves also had two hits and drove in two. Carson Pierce and Brodie Ceechi also each had two RBI’s apiece for GCHS.
Canyon Reeves picked up the win in relief.
On Wednesday, in Day Six BATB action, Ocaen Springs hosts perennial state power Oxford, St. Martin hosts Canton Academy and West Harrison hosts Hatley while Picayune hosts Pillow Academy in Gulfport.
