GULFPORT — This week’s “Baria Law Firm Game Ball of the Week” goes to Taevion Collier of Gulfport as presented by SouthMiss6 Sports.

Every week throughout the end of the school year, we will honor student/athletes across the “Southern Six” with our “Game Ball of the Week” sponsored by David Baria, Attorney-Mediator.

Collier, a junior pitcher, twirled a pair of mound masterpieces for the Admirals this week in annual “Battle of the Beach” action.

First up, on Saturday, Home-standing Gulfport followed the solid mound work from starting pitcher Taevion Collier to a close 3-1 win over Pascagoula Saturday afternoon.

Collier hurled just over six innings in picking up the win, as he scattered six hits, struck out six and walked four. Thomas Stennis came on in the seventh to record the last two outs and earn a save.

Tolar Raybourn had half of the six total hits for the Admirals in the winning attack, including a pair of doubles, and he drove in two runs in support of his mound mate Collier.

“He was extremely competitive, we needed a big outing out of him and he provided it,” first-year GHS head coach Justin Edwards said of Collier.

Then, Thursday night, Collier was right back at it on the hill as he hurled just over six stanzas once again in a 1-0 Gulfport win over Briarcrest Christian at Herbert Wilson Park.

Collier was dominant as he struck out eight and scattered just four singles in keeping the Saints scoreless in the process. Stennis again came on to record the last two outs and get the save.

For the season, Collier is 3-0 with a miniscule 0.59 earned run average. In four appearances, he has struck out 32 while allowing just 15 hits and five runs.
