Prep Baseball: Yellow Jackets hand Greyhounds first Region 4-7A loss

ST. MARTIN — Home-standing St. Martin handed league-leading Ocean Springs its first Region 4-7A loss Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of runs in the home half of the sixth stanza to erase a slight 3-2 deficit and pull out a big 4-3 win over the Greyhounds.

The late runs allowed St. Martin to avoid a three game sweep at the hands of its neighboring arch-rival, as the Yellow Jackets move to 2-4 in the region race. Despite the loss, OSHS, the defending league top seed, still sits in the top spot at 5-1 after two weeks of play.

The Greyhounds opened the scoring in the top of the first on Justin San Miguel’s RBI-single,

Adam Clower’s two-run home run with two outs in the top of the third made it 3-0 OSHS and the visitors seemed headed toward that sweep.

But the Jackets responded, with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame on Caleb Lawrence’s two-run single to make it 3-2.

Lawrence was back at it in that decisive sixth stanza, as he tied the game up with an RBI-single before Gavin Nitcavic’s RBI-single put St. Martin up for the first time all night at 4-3 with what proved to be the winning run.

Lawrence’s two hits and game-high three RBI’s led the way for SMHS

Lincoln Hust went the distance on the hill to earn the win, allowing six hits while striking out three and walking two.

Lucas Sinopoli had two hits for OSHS, and Clower had that homer.

Cannon Hensarling also went the distance for the ‘hounds in taking the loss, striking out eight in six innings and walking three.

On Thursday night, in game two at Greyhound Field, The Greyhounds shutout St. Martin 10-0.

A.J. Arguello had three hits for OSHS and drove in two runs, while both Clower and A.J. Rossi each had two RBIs apiece. Both Hensarling and Jack Jordan each had a double.

Tristen Fox tossed a complete game one-hitter to take the win on the mound in the shortened game, striking out nine and walking one.

Rivers Groue took the loss.

Cameron Romero had the only hit for SMHS.
