PASCAGOULA — The last time Pascagoula faced Pearl River Central in the state baseball playoffs, the Panthers swept the series en route to a spot in the state championship round.

History won’t repeat itself.

The visiting Blue Devils completed a two game sweep over Pascagoula Saturday night in the opening round of the Class 6A South State playoffs with a 10-3 road win.

That decision, following PRC’s 7-2 comeback win at home Friday night, sends the Blue Devils into the second round and avenges a two game sweep by PHS in the 2021 playoffs.

In game two, PRC carried over the late game momentum from Friday night to take a quick 1-0 lead in the first frame on a lead-off double by J.J. Morreale followed by an RBI-single by Blake Gill.

Morreale then led off the top of the third with a solo home run and the Blue Devils were up 2-0.

But Pascagoula had one last gasp in it to try and keep its season alive, as the Panthers got a solo home run from Sebastian Ford in the third and a run-scoring ground out from Willie Sims in the fourth to knot things up at 2-2.

PRC responded immediately, though, ripping off four runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a big two-run double by Eric Mavor to take command of the contest at 6-2 and never look back.

Gill added a two-run double in PRC’s next at bat and that would end the season for the Panthers, who were in the playoffs for the first time since 2021.

Mavor had a game-high three RBIs, while Gill had two hits and two RBIs and Morreale had two hits for PRC.

C. Bounds started and worked six solid stanzas on the hill to earn the win for the Blue Devils.
