VANCLEAVE — St. Martin opened the Woody Cagnolatti era in fine fashion Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets swarmed into Vancleave and bombed the Bulldogs 64-21 in the season-opener for both squads. Cagnolatti was in his first game as SMHS head coach after being promoted from defensive coordinator earlier this season.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in taking control of the contest, as freshman quarterback Dawsen Sullivan made his mark on a 17-yard touchdown run. St Martin would run the swinging gate conversion try with a quick pitch to Jayden Curtis next and gain an 8-0 edge with 03:02 to go in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, St Martin quarterback Seth Crockett would connect with Cameron Romero on a 41 yard scoring pass play to make it 15-0.
Vancleave would then answer rather quickly with Kyle Capers rushing to the end zone on a 52-yard touchdown dash to cut the deficit to 15-7. A mere few short minutes later St Martin QB Seth Crockett rushed 23 yards on the quarterback draw for a 22-7 lead.
Vancleave would answer once more with sophomore running back Anthony Buxton rumbling up the heart of the Yellow Jacket defense to cut St Martin’s lead again to 22-14.

St Martin’s Seth Crockett would continue his big night on the ground with a pair of scoring runs at the 03:50 and 00:46 mark of the second quarter. The Crockett rushes were from 10 and 19 yards, respectively, and. the Yellow Jackets went into halftime up 36-14.
The third quarter was more Crockett, as he once again found the end zone on the ground from 4-yards away with 10:32 to go in the quarter to make it 43-14.
Vancleave quarterback Reece Thomason found Kaden Peterson wide open for a 60-yard scoring pass to make it 43-21. But that was it for the home team.

But the scoreboard bulbs would be rearranged yet again as Sullivan found wide out Ezell Johnson crossing the end zone for the touchdown, followed by a 10-yard scoring strike from Sullivan to Romero with 01:40 remaining in the third to make it 57-21.
The final SMHS touchdown of the game came on a 19-yard scoring run by Josiah Matthews.
St Martin gained 558 combined yards of offense in the win.
Next week Vancleave will travel to Class 4A Richland, while St Martin will travel to East Central.
