MOSS POINT — As Moss Point looks to snap a near school record 10 game losing streak Friday night, the Tigers remain at home in week two of the new season and host Jackson Lanier.
And, if past results hold true, MPHS may just do that.
That contest will be just their third ever meeting between those two teams on the gridiron and first in 46 years since 1979, a game that took place at Hughes Field. It will also mark just Lanier’s second trip ever to Moss Point, and first since 1978. Friday night will mark just three days short of 47 years to the date (Sept. 8, 1978) since the Bulldogs have been in Dantzler Stadium.

The Tigers beat the Bulldogs at home 16-6 in 1978 and on the road 29-8 in 1979.
Lanier opened the season with a 28-12 win over visiting Harrison Central last week before heading down to Jackson County seven days later. Moss Point was hammered by visiting and arch-rival Pascagoula 47-0 last week in the season-opener for both teams.

The last time Lanier visited Moss Point, Tiger All-State tailback George Wonsley ran roughshod over the Bulldog defense in that aforementioned 10-point win. The senior, who was bound for a starting assignment in the offensive backfield at Mississippi State, ran for 201 yards and both Tiger touchdowns in the victory.
Also, only twice in the past 70 years have a pair of teams from the Jackson area played a prep football game in Jackson County on the same night. The second of those times happened on 9-8-78 when Pascagoula beat visiting Callaway High 26-0 and Moss Point beat visiting Lanier High 16-6..
