HURLEY — St. Martin is off to its first 2-0 start to a season in six years.
The Yellow Jackets, under the guidance of new head coach Woody Cagnolatti, knocked off East Central 34-14 on the road Friday night here at Shirley Stadium. St. Martin is 2-0 for the first time since 2019, after thumping another Jackson County rival Vancleave 64-21 also on the road last week.

The home-standing Hornets, however, are off to their third straight 0-2 start under fourth-year head coach Sam Huff.
The teams traded scores early in the game, as SMHS quarterback Seth Crockett found wide out Cameron Romero open on a 35-Yard touchdown pass and ECHS responded with a short scoring run from Dylan Barrjas to knot things up at 7-7.
But, the Yellow Jackets bounced back on a 30-yard scoring run by Crockett with four minutes to play in the second stanza to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.

As the second half unfolded, the Yellow Jackets steadily extended their lead thanks to a 44-yard touchdown toss from Crockett to Danarius Shelby about a minute into the third frame, as well as a 2-yard scoring run by Crockett on St. Martin’s next possession to make it 28-7.
Maddox Dunn added another touchdown run for ECHS, and Crockett’s third touchdown run of the contest, this one from 2-yards out mid-way through the fourth period, closed out the scoring.

Crockett accounted for all five SMHS touchdowns, as he finished with three on the ground and two through the air. He went 10-of-17 for 191 yards passing.
