With the start of yet another prep football season across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for our second installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.
“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are seven things we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:
- Pow Wow — For the first time in eight years, Biloxi picked up a home win over Pascagoula Friday night. And it also resulted in the first win of the new season for the Indians. Biloxi jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead and held on at the end for a 21-18 win over visiting Pascagoula at The Biloxi Sports Complex. The decision leaves both teams at 1-1 on the young campaign. It also denied Pascagoula a 2-0 start for the third straight season, and prevented the Indians from starting a season at 02 for the first time since 2017, or the same year BHS last beat PHS at home. Indian running back Dylan Dixson ran for a pair of first half touchdowns, as he carried for a 2-yard scoring run to make it 14-0. Dixon wasn’t finished, as his second touchdown run of the first half, this one from 3-yards out, upped the BHS lead to 21-0 with just over four minutes to play before halftime.
- Tomahawk Chop — Gautier has lost three regular season game in its past 16 contests. But two of those have come to D’Iberville, and the latest on Friday night may have been the most notable of all. The visiting Warriors crashed the home-opener for the defending Class 5A South State champs 42-17 here at Vaughan-Wallace Stadium. D’Iberville moves to 2-0 on the young campaign, and the Gators drop to 1-1. Also, the loss snaps a 20-game home win streak for Gautier dating back to a 42-14 loss to Picayune to end the 2021 regular season. It also marks the second straight 2-0 start for DHS under fourth-year head coach and formerWarrior standout player Josh Ladner. Last year, also in the second week of the season, DHS handed Gautier its only regular season loss as the Gators began their march to the only state title game in program history with a 33-12 decision. Warrior quarterback Jordan Walley ran for one touchdown and threw for another to lead the way to the resounding win.
- Quick Start — St. Martin is off to its first 2-0 start to a season in six years. The Yellow Jackets, under the guidance of new head coach Woody Cagnolatti, knocked off East Central 34-14 on the road Friday night here at Shirley Stadium. St. Martin is 2-0 for the first time since 2019, after thumping another Jackson County rival Vancleave 64-21 also on the road last week. The home-standing Hornets, however, are off to their third straight 0-2 start under fourth-year head coach Sam Huff. Crockett completed 10 of 17 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He added 88 yards on the ground with three rushing touchdowns.
- Late Score — Stone was looking for its first 2-0 start to a season in eight years Friday night as Poplarville came calling. The Tomcats are still looking. The Hornets snatched victory from the jaws of defeat here at A.L. May Stadium on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, overcoming a 21-7 first half deficit to pull out a 22-21 win in the final minutes. The decision evens the defending Class 4A state champions’ record up at 1-1 in the new season, while dropping Stone to even at 1-1 as well. Hornet standout tailback Ty Keys finished the night with 22 carries for 157 yards and two scores, including the final touchdown two-point conversion with less than three minutes to play.
- Rebel Yell — Harrison Central picked up its first win of the season. Red Rebel tailback Zahkarri McGlothin ran 19 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-14 win over visiting Hancock Friday night.
- Dogs Bite — New Ocean Springs running back Solomon Baggett ran for two first half touchdowns as the Greyhounds rolled up 27 first half points en route to a 27-17 win over Petal Friday night. Greyhound linebacker Brody Saenz registered 12 tackles and recovered a fumble in the win.
- Oh for Two — Bay High’s Que Victor for 96 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ 20-14 loss to St. Stanislaus. Victor also returned a kick 90 yards for a score, but Bay High fell to 0-2, just like its opponent this week, Long Beach, did in a 21-12 loss to Forrest County High. The home-standingAggies jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead. Junior Brown scored on a 22-yard run for the Bearcats and S.J. Valentine caught an 85-yard touchdown toss.
