A couple of teams in Region 8-4A are in dire need of a win as the prep football season enters week number three.
And, they both happen to be nicknamed the Tigers, and each has a new head coach in place as well.
Especially the once mighty Moss Point Tigers.
Moss Point hosts St. Stanislaus this week and the Tigers enter the contest on Dantzler Street Friday night at 0-2 and with an 11-game losing streak dating back to the beginning of last season.
The losing streak has reached historic proportions for MPHS, as after a 42-6 thumping at the hands of visiting Jackson Lanier last week, it’s now the longest in program history in 73 years since the 1952 team struggled to an 0-11 record that season.

Moss Point went 0-9 last year. In the first two games this season, the Tigers have allowed 89 points and scored six under new head coach Derek Jenkins.
On the complete other end of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Bay High has also started the new campaign off at 0-2. The Tigers are coming off of a close 20-14 loss to neighborhood rival St. Stanislaus in the annual “Battle for the Crab Trap” in new head coach Katlan French’s second game at the helm of the Tigers
And while Bay High isn’t quite on as rough of a streak as Moss Point is currently, the Hancock County crew of Tigers has lost six straight games dating back to mid-season last year and they’ve lost 11 out of their last 12 games dating back to week two of last season.
Bay High is also just 2-15 over its last 17 games. It’s the worst stretch for BHS since it lost 20 straight games from mid-season in 2016-mid-season 2018 which included a 0-10 mark in 2017.

But, just like Bay High did last year at 2-8 and just like Moss Point did in 2022 at 2-8, one of these two teams will qualify for the 2025 Class 4A South State playoffs by the end of next month with at least one win.
Yes, there’s a lot of season left. But the winner of the game between these two Coastal Tiger teams on Oct. 10th, at Dantzler Stadium, will in all likelihood, qualify for the playoffs, no matter if the current struggles for each continue or not.

Bay High faces Long Beach, which is also 0-2, Friday night.
