LAUREL — Laurel went “Between the Bricks” Friday night for the first time since any of the current players and even some of the current Admiral coaches were born.
And after a sloppy start, GHS came away from historic R.H. Watkins Stadium at Laurel High School with its first win of the season.
Gulfport senior running back Cooper Crosby scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, as the Admirals tallied 17 unanswered points to close out the contest after trailing early 14-0 to sneak out of Jones County with a 17-14 win.

Gulfport is now 1-1 after an open date last week, while the Golden Tornadoes drop to 0-3 on the year.
The home team struck first with a 60-yard pick-six by sophomore DeCorey McGruber with 8:22 left in the first quarter, going up 7-0.
Gulfport fumbled on its next possession and Laurel would capitalize and score on an 11-yard scramble by sophomore quarterback Bryson Bivens with 5:28 left in the first quarter.
But that would be it for the Golden Tornadoes.
Crosby then got Gulfport going, as he responded with his first scoring run to cut the deficit in half going into halftime at 14-7.

Crosby’s second score, with 5:41 left in the third quarter, tied the game at 14-14.
Gulfport sophomore Shaw Killebrew kicked the go-ahead 29-yard field goal with 3:27 left in the fourth quarter for the game-winner to go up 17-14.
The game was the annual Laurel High Dragon game, which pays tribute to the former Oak Park High School.
The Tornadoes forced five turnovers on the night, including picking off GHS Parker Nettles three times.
But in the end, Gulfport’s first trip “Between the Bricks” in 26 years, since 1999, was a successful one.
