With the start of yet another prep football season across South Mississippi last week, it’s time for our third installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are 7 things (or 8) we noticed in the “Southern 6” Friday night:

  1. Superman — After earning Most Valuable Player honors in the Class 4A state championship game as just a sophomore, it didn’t take many games into his junior season for Poplarville standout tailback Ty Keys to take it to another level. Keys ran for a career and program high 508 yards and a state-record-tying eight touchdowns on just 18 carries Friday night in leading his Hornets to a 60-54 shootout win on the road at Hancock High. To say that Keys ran roughshod over the Hawks would be an understatement of drastic proportions. He ran through, around, in front of, beside and mostly outran the HHS defenders. He tore off an 89-yard scoring dash, an 80-yard scoring scamper, a 75-yard touchdown run, a 65-yard touchdown jaunt and a 63-yard scoring run in his almost unbelievable exploits. He also added scoring runs from and 1-yard out, and all six of those scoring runs came by the end of the third quarter.
  2. (Clark Kent —) In the same game, the performance by Keys overshadowed an impressive outing by Hancock senior signal-caller Kaison Koenenn, who threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another three in a losing effort.
  3. Uncle Junior — Long Beach senior running back Junior Brown had Bay High screaming “uncle” Friday night, as the Bearcats thumped the Tigers 49-0. Brown ran for 130 yards and one touchdown, and he teammed up with Bearcat quarterback DJ McDonald who ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns and also had two touchdown tosses as LBHS picked up its first win of the season.
  4. Batman Baggett — Ocean Springs is off to a 3-0 start on the new season. The Greyhounds clawed out a hard-fought 21-14 win over home-standing Pascagoula Friday night at War Memorial Stadium for the PHS Homecoming, and the senior running back Baggett was a main reason why. Baggett registered a pair of rushing touchdowns in the first half to help OSHS overcome two early deficits and pull out the win.
  5. The Flash — Also in Jackson County Friday night, just across Jefferson Street, Moss Point snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 24-14 win over St. Stanislaus. Tiger quarterback Keelan Harper threw two touchdown passes in the win.
  6. Spider Man — Picayune and Biloxi met for the first time in 13 years on the football field Friday night. The result was the same as it was in 2012 The Maroon Tide knocked off the visiting Indians 23-14 at Lee-Triplett Stadium in the renewal of a once old Big 8 Conference series. Picayune moves to a perfect 3-0 with the win, as Maroon Tide sophomore running back Xavier Dennis ran for 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way.
  7. Dynamic Duo — Also in Pearl River County Friday night, about six miles north up Highway 11, PRC also moved to 3-0 on the year with a 50-21 win over visiting East Central. The Feaster brothers did most of the damage for the Blue Devils, as quarterback Titus Feaster threw four touchdown passes and wide out John Feaster Jr, hauled in three of those scoring catches.
  8. Aquaman — West Harrison is off to a 3-0 start for the second time in four seasons, and just for the second time as well in program history. The home-standing Hurricanes thumped Gautier 47-17 Friday night, and even though some of the game was played in a torrential downpour, West Harrison running back Jordan Stapleton ran for three touchdowns in the first half alone in the win.
