And then there were two…

After four weeks of play in the new prep football season, only a pair of “Southern Six” squads are still searching for their first wins of the season.

Hancock is the only team in Region 4-6A without a win so far this season, after falling on the road 35-0 to St. Martin last week.

The Hawks are off to an 0-4 start for the first time in 18 years, since 2007. That season was the last of three consecutive winless seasons when the Hawks went 0-10 following an 0-11 mark in 2006 and 0-8 in a bit of an abbreviated Hurricane Katrina campaign in 2005 as the losing streak reached 29 straight games.

Hancock is off this week, before traveling to Bay High next week.

And speaking of Bay High, the Tigers are the only other win-less team left in the “Southern Six”.

Bay High, which competes in Region 8-4A, is also off to an 0-3 start this season. The Tigers are coming off of an open week as they head to Hattiesburg to face Presbyterian Christian this week.

The Tigers have lost seven straight games dating back to mid-season last year and they’ve lost 12 out of their last 13 games dating back to week two of last season.

Bay High is also just 2-16 over its last 18 games. It’s the worst stretch for BHS since it lost 20 straight games from mid-season in 2016-mid-season 2018, which included a 0-10 mark in 2017.

The Tigers are off to an 0-3 start for the first time in seven years, since 2018, when they finished 1-9.

“Super 7” in the “Southern 6”

Every Tuesday through the first week in December, we will publish our “Super 7 in the Southern 6” weekly poll involving all 24 prep football teams in our coverage area.

The weekly poll is the only one in the state that is voted on by a panel of veteran sportswriters, a few selected area coaches and other media members.

This are the week five rankings for 2025.
