A huge prep volleyball match is on tap Tuesday night as Ocean Springs hosts OLA in a big battle as the regular season winds down.

The Crescents, the three-time defending Class 3A state champs,  have won a slew of state titles in the past 20 years, and seem set on doing so again this season after capturing yet another Region 8-3A title recently. The Lady Greyhounds are riding high as the defending Class 7A South State champs and have just repeated as Region 4-7A champs as well with an undefeated 12-0 mark.

OLA is 30-3 on the season and OSHS is 35-3, making this one of the biggest regular season match-ups in the state in recent memory.

The state playoffs begin Saturday for the states smaller classifications, including OLA, and then in one week on Tuesday, Oct., 7th for the larger classifications, including Ocean Springs.

Jackson County Hoops Tourney

And speaking of action on the hardwood at Hubbard Gymnasium at OSHS, a new basketball tournament has been announced that will take place there at “The Hub” at the end of the year.

The reincarnation of the “Jackson County Basketball Tournament” is slated for Dec. 29th and 30th this year, taking place the week between Christmas and New Year’s. The first in what the organizers hope will be an annual affair will feature four boys teams including Ocean Springs and Pascagoula taking on George County and Fairhope, Ala.

Greyhound head coach Colin Goley and Pascagoula head coach Lorenzo Wright are the masterminds behind the event, and said they hope to eventually grow the tourney to include other Jackson County schools soon.

The event will feature a true “tournament style” format, where winners meet winners for the championship and losers do the same in a consolation bracket.

Also, in addition to a Boys event in Ocean Springs, the PHS Lady Panthers will be hosting the girls version of the “Jackson County Basketball Tournament” in Pascagoula at the same time.

Again, Pascagoula and OSHS will be involved as will two teams out of the Mobile, Ala., area in Davidson High and Theodore.

The plan as of now is to alternate the site of the two events between OSHS and PHS each year.
