VANCLEAVE — Kyle Capers of Vancleave gets the “Baria Law Firm Game Ball of the Week” as presented by SouthMiss6 Sports this week.

Every week throughout the end of the school year, we will honor student/athletes across the “Southern Six” with our “Game Ball of the Week” sponsored by David Baria, Attorney-Mediator.

Vancleave embarrassed once mighty Moss Point to tune of a 69-18 pounding Friday night, and the senior tailback Capers was a big key as the Bulldogs won their second straight game of the year.

Capers ran roughshod over the hapless Tiger defenders for 212 yards on 16 carries and four scores. The Bulldogs, almost inexplicably, scored 42 points in the FIRST QUARTER alone to take a quick and commanding lead. It marked the most points ever allowed in a single quarter of play in the 100-year history of MPHS football.

Capers would shift out of the backfield wide left and take the set pass a few inches behind the line of scrimmage for a 43 yard run and score to get things rolling and set the tone just after the opening kickoff.

He also scored from 4-yards out and on a 12-yard scoring dash in the opening period to make it 42-6 entering the second quarter.

The point total amassed by Vancleave was one point short of the single game record ever allowed by the Tigers, only behind a 2019 70-35 loss to East Central. Also, the 69 points scored by the Bulldogs were just two points short of setting a single game scoring record, only behind the 71 points scored in a 71-34 win over South Jones five years ago.
