In week one of the current prep football season, Moss Point hosted long-time arch rival Pascagoula in the annual “Battle of the Cats”.

The Panthers thumped the Tigers 47-0 that night. But since that start, things have gone vastly different for both teams.

Pascagoula has gone on to lose five straight games and stands 1-5 in mid-October for the first time in four years as well as for the third time in the past eight seasons. It’s also the second time in the past four seasons that the Panthers have lost five straight games in a campaign.

On the other side of the ledger, Moss Point has won two out of its past six games since that season-opening loss, including a 14-13 win over Bay High in Region 8-4A play last week.

And while the Tigers certainly haven’t enjoyed a lot of success recently, checking in with a 4-21 record over the last three seasons, MPHS in all likelihood, assured itself of a berth in the upcoming Class 4A South State playoffs for the first time since 2022 with that win last week.

The 3-10 combined mark for both Pascagoula and Moss Point this late in the season, however, is at an historic pace for the two neighboring programs. You have to go back almost 80 years, to late October of the 1948 season, for the Tigers and Panthers to have as few as a trio of wins combined as well as double digits losses this late in the month.

That year, with the season not starting until September 10th, MPHS was 2-5-1 and PHS was 1-6 for a combined total of 3-11-1. And, by the way, Moss Point was also on a two game win streak at that point after starting the season off at 1-5-1 just to reach that three win combined total.

“Super 7” in the “Southern 6”

Every Tuesday through the first week in December, we will publish our “Super 7 in the Southern 6” weekly poll involving all 24 prep football teams in our coverage area.
