CLINTON — Coming into the Class 6A state championship vollyeball match, three-time and defending state champion Lake Cormorant was 47-0 against other competition in the same classification in the state of Mississippi over the past three seasons.
George County found out firsthand exactly why here on the hardwood of A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College Friday morning.
The Lady Gators made quick work of the Lady Rebels in a three set sweep (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) to capture not only their fourth straight state title but eighth overall crown as well.

Lake Cormorant won the Class 5A state title in 2022 and has now captured the Class 6A crown for the third straight season.
George County’s Aryana Dixon slammed home the first point in the first set on a kill for the Lady Rebels, but things went downhill pretty much after that for GCHS, thanks in large part to the play of Lady Gator senior standout Sofia Gonzalez.
Gonzalez is the three-time Class 6A “Miss Volleyball” in the state and took home her third straight Class 6A Most Valuable Player award in the state championship match on Friday as well. She paced LCHS with 19 kills, 19 digs, and three service aces.

After dropping the first two sets by identical seven point deficits, George County came alive in the third and final set thanks to some powerful play at the net by both Dixon and Jordyn Bradley and and some key set ups by libero Blakely Slay and trailed just 16-14.

But a Gonzalex kill and a key point from Peyton Davis steamed the tide back in the Lady Gators favor, and LCHS closed out the match on a 9-7 spurt to seal the deal.

Lake Cormorant is now 48-0 against Class 6A competition since moving up to that classification three seasons ago and finishes this season at 34-8. During that undefeated 48 straight match win streak, the Lady Gators also have not lost a set.
