As region play continued for most everyone again last week it’s time for our ninth installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.

“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are 7 things we noticed in the :”Southern Six” Friday night:

  1. Action Jackson — In the first meeting between the two teams in five years, home-standing Pascagoula pounded PRC unmercifully all over the field in dominating fashion throughout the first two quarters to take a commanding 35-0 into halftime and coast to an easy 42-0 win in a key Region 4-6A contest. Panther senior standout tailback Amarie Jackson, plagued by injury issues over the past month or so, bounced back in impressive fashion as he ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone to set the tone. The win on Homecoming night moved PHS to 3-5 overall, but more importantly, 2-1 in the region race. PRC fell to just the opposite, 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Also, the win was the 600th all-time for Pascagoula in program history. In addition, it was the 100th win at the helm of the Panthers for head coach Lewis Sims who is in the midst of his 15th season as PHS head coach.
  2. Dennis The Menace — Picayune retained the top spot in Region 4-6A play, as t he league-leading Maroon Tide thumped home-standing Long Beach 42-7. Maroon Tide tailback Xavier Dennis ran for 371 yards and four touchdowns to power Picayune to the win. Picayune defender Amare Scott registered 12 total tackles, including three tackles for loss, to lead the way on that side of the ball as the Maroon Tide moved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in region play.
  3. Cool Kaison — Meanwhile, in Gautier at Vaughan-Wallace Stadium, visiting Hancock slipped past the Gators 28-27 in Region 4-6A action. Hawks quarterback Kaison Koennenn accounted for all four Hancock touchdowns, including the game-winner on a nine-yard scoring run late in the game. He also threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for one more as well. The win pushed Hancock to just 3-5 overall, but more importantly 2-1 in the region race, while Gautier dropped its second straight league contest in the waning moments for the second straight week and dropped to 1-2 in region play and 3-5 overall as well. The Gators took a 27-21 lead with just over three minutes to play, on quarterback Keon McNeil’s fourth touchdown pass of the game. But the Hawks blocked the extra point, and Hancock pulled the game out McNeil, just an eighth grader, finished the night with a career-high 477 yards passing and the four scores, but he also threw four interceptions including two in the last part of the fourth frame that Hancock defensive back Kagon Anderson came up with.
  4. Crosby Show — Gulfport maintained the lead atop the Region 4-7A standings with a comfortable 35-0 win over arch-rival Biloxi at historic Milner Stadium. Admirals senior running back Cooper Crosby had a huge night for the Admirals, rushing for 134 yards and two touchdowns and also scoring on a 15-yard reception to open the game’s scoring. His first running score was for 77-yards through the line of scrimmage then down the visitors’ sideline as the first quarter came to an end to give the Admirals a 14-0 lead and the home team never looked back. Gulfport quarterback Parker Nettles also had a big night, completing 15 of 19 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.
  5. King Solomon — An open date last week seemed to have no effect whatsoever on Ocean Springs, as the Greyhounds went on the road and walloped West Harrison 56-21 in Region 4-7A play. The win moves OSHS to 7-1 overall and, more importantly 3-1 in the region race, while the Hurricanes fell to 6-3 overall and are now 2-3 in league action. Ocean Spring senior standout running back Solomon Baggett ran roughshod through the Hurricane defense all night, rushing for 203 yards on just 10 carries and four touchdowns in the winning effort. Baggett tallied two touchdowns in the first half, including one on a 55-yard scoring scamper, as OSHS actually overcame an early first quarter deficit to take a 28-21 halftime lead.
  6. Green Grass — Stone entered Friday night’s game at Vancleave as the only remaining unbeaten team in Region 4-5A play. And when the Tomcats headed back to Wiggins, they still were. Visiting Stone overcame a scrappy bunch of Bulldogs 30-23 in a big region battle. The win moves the Tomcats one step closer to their first region title in three years, as they now sit 3-0 in league play and 5-3 overall. While Vancleave slips to just the opposite, at 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the region race. Stone sophomore running back Ayden Green ran for 103 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown in the winning effort. Vancleave tailback Kyle Capers carried the ball 26 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a punt 75 yards for a score.
  7. Seth Scores — St. Martin sophomore quarterback Seth Crockett ran for 124 yards and four touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets kept their slim Class 7A South State playoffs alive with a 50-13 thumping of home-standing Harrison Central.
