The regular season is almost completely finished for everyone, and it’s time for our 10th installment of “Friday Night Rewind” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.
“Friday Night Rewind” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season we’ll take a look back at the action that took place all across this region the previous week before we move on to the next week.

Here are 7 things we noticed in the :”Southern Six” Friday night:
- Admirals Rule — On a cool, crisp and clear All Hallows Eve, Gulfport won its first region football title in six years Friday night. The visiting Admirals led by as much as 17 points late in the fourth period and managed to hold off a scrappy D’Iberville team 38-35 in Region 4-7A play at Warrior Stadium. The win secures the league crown for Gulfport, which moved to 5-0 in the region race and 7-2 overall. D’Iberville is 7-2 also overall and drops to 3-2 in league play and will finish as the third seed in the loop. Gulfport running back Cooper Crosby accounted for four total touchdowns and Admiral quarterback Parker Nettles threw for 225 yards and three scores in the winning effort. In a valiant effort, D’Iberville quarterback Jordam Walley threw for 182 yards and ran for another 144 and three touchdowns.
- Heads up Hornets — For the second straight season, an underdog East Central team found a way to come out on top over arch-rival Vancleave in the annual Singing River Bowl And this year’s win may have been even more unlikely than the last. With a trip to the upcoming Class 5A South State playoffs within reach for the Bulldogs, the visiting Hornets overcame a 14-0 first half deficit and pulled out an exciting 27-24 win Friday night in Region 4-5A play. The win was the first of the season in league action for ECHS, which moves to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the loop. hornet quarterback Maddox Dunn threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another in the win.
- Panther Pride — Visiting Pascagoula completely destroyed Hancock’s “Senior Night” by thumping the Hawks 35-0. The win secured the second seed and homefield advantage in the opening round of the upcoming Class 6A South State playoffs for the Panthers. Pascagoula tailback Amarie Jackson ran all over the home team as he registered 195 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
- Not Again — Biloxi scored on its second play in overtime to give the Indians a 42-35 win over the West Harrison and once again leave the Hurricanes on the outside looking in as far as the state playoffs are concerned. Speedy senior running back/wide receiver William Lai lined up at the quarterback position for both snaps in overtime, picking up two yards on the first snap, then outracing the Hurricanes defense on a right sweep from 8 yards out to the end zone to give the Indians their third lead of the game and the win over the heavily-favored Hurricanes. West Harrison’s season ended with the loss, and the Hurricanes now have gone 17 seasons and never qualified for the postseason. The loss overshadowed an outstanding effort from WHHS running back Sean Fairley, who ran for 267 yards rushing and scored twice.
- Top Tomcats — Stone High got off the bus at Northeast Jones Friday night with its mission clear and simple. Win and the Tomcats would clinch the Region 3-5A championship outright, and the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A playoffs that comes with it. Lose and they would need to win next week to wrap things up And the Tomcats took care of business, outlasting the Tigers 17-7 in a hard-fought region contest at Tiger Stadium on the NE Jones campus. Stone remained undefeated in region at 4-0 (6-3 overall), while the Tigers dropped to 4-5 and 1-3.
6. 28 Straight – Long live the King.Picayune captured its fifth straight region title with its 28th consecutive league win Friday night, 35-31 in exciting fashion over home-standing Gautier. The decision in Region 4-6A play moves the Maroon Tide to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the region race, while the Gators dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the loop. The loss also eliminated Gautier, which played for the Class 5A state championship last year, from state playoff contention. Picayune quarterback Colt Robertson hit Maroon Tide running back Jordan Hathorne on a 70-yard catch and run for what proved to be the eventual game-winning score with right at seven minutes to play. Picayune running back Xavier Dennis finished with 271 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
7. Devilish Process — Pearl River Central punched its ticket to the Class 6A South State playoffs for the second straight season Friday night by pounding visiting Long Beach 49-21 Friday night. Blue Devils sophomore quarterback Titus Feaster threw for a career-high 448 yards and six touchdowns, with all the scores coming in the first half. Kendall Morrison was his favorite target with three scoring catches and 189 yards in receptions,
