ST. MARTIN — A pair of “Southern Six” and cross-county female foes that have been steady forces over the past few years faced off to open an new prep basketball season Tuesday night.
And home-standing St. Martin dispatched Moss Point 44-29 in an all Jackson County affair.
Lady Yellow Jacket guard Kaleah Lowery made a significant statement in her return to the court after she missed all of last season with an injury as she tallied a co-game-high 17 points to lead the way in the winning effort.





She was joined in double digits by a big presence in the post in SMHS center Janilla Curtis, who added 12 points. Curtis is the twin sister of St. Martin defensive lineman Jayden Curtis.
Lowery’s backcourt mate Kylenn Glenn chipped in 10 points to the winning cause as well.
The teams battled on even terms throughout most of the first two quarters, as Moss Point’s Trinity Magee dropped in 10 first half points and the visitors trailed by just two at 17-15 entering halftime.





But the home team responded by dominating the third frame, out-scoring MPS 15-5 in the frame as Lowery poured in nine points in the decisive period including a pair of 3-pointers as SMHS stretched the lead to double digits at 32-20 entering the final stanza.
Magee matched Lowery’s 17 points for the Lady Tigers to tie for co-game-high honors.
