PASS CHRISTIAN — St. Martin moved to 2-0 on the new season with a 58-45 win over Gautier Saturday afternoon in final day action at the Pass Christian Invitational Tournament.
It was the second win in as many outings for the Yellow Jackets over a Jackson County rival , as they thumped Moss Point 77-17 Tuesday night at home in the season opener for both teams.
It hasn’t taken long for Gulfport transfer Markell Simmons to make his mark with his new team after he moved over to fellow Region 4-7A foe SMHS, as he poured in a game-high 32 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Saturday to register a double-double.

R.J. Keys, fresh from his time as a versatile standout for the Yellow Jackets football team, chipped in 10 points in the win over the Gators while Tyson Walker added eight points to the winning effort. Walker also dished out five assists and George Norman had five steals and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Julez Watson led Gautier with 13 points, while Fredrick Davis added nine points and both Ayden Isom and Jaqui Travis each had eight points for the Gators.
Gautier dropped to 0-2 with its second straight loss to a Jackson County foe after falling to Ocean Springs on Tuesday night.

Also on Tuesday night, St. Martin got 11 points apiece from both Simmons and Walker while Norman had eight points in that 77-17 win over visiting Moss Point.
Simmons also had seven boards while Terrence Allen had five steals and three assists in the winning effort. Veteran SMHS head coach Charlie Pavlus emptied the bench late as 12 different players scored for SMHS.
Jeremiah Smith had six points for the Tigers.

“We only return two starters with Keys and Allen,” Pavlus said, “But Simmons will be extremely important on both sides of the ball with his athleticism and high skill set. Most people will be focusing on him and Keys, however our other guys all have the ability to impact the game on any given night.”
