Prep Basketball: Lady Indians come to Pascagoula Tuesday night with a 1-1 mark

The Pascagoula girls host Biloxi Tuesday night in the renewal of a long-time Gulf Coast rivalry. The Lady Indians are 1-1 on the season while the Lady Panthers are 0-1. Biloxi opened the season on the road thumping Daphne (Ala.) 59-30 Thursday.

Prep All-American junior standout center Zaniya Johnson began her new campaign just like she finished most games over the past two seasons with another double-double as she scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Jayla Carriere also tallied a co-game-high 20 points, and point guard Na’Kenya Terry dished out seven assists and had five steals. Daphne guard Abby Johnson, considered one of the top players in the state of Alabama this season, led the Lady Trojans with nine points.

On Saturday, Biloxi faced the team that ended the season for the Lady Indians in the overall Class 7A Final Four last year and suffered the same fate. The Lady Indians remained on the road and headed to Madison Central High to play Starkville in the BASSA Rumble in the Jungle. The Lady Yellow Jackets again knocked off Biloxi 46-33. Carriere had a game-high 14 points in the loss, while Johnson chipped in 10 points. Starkville got 12 points apiece from both Jada Gay and Jade Brown.

The Lady Yellow Jackets beat Biloxi 23-16 last year at “The Big House” as the Lady Indians ended the season at 30-2. Biloxi ripped off 21 straight wins to open last season. After dispatching the Lady Indians in the overall Class 7A state semifinals, Tupelo stopped Starkville 62-57 in overtime to take the state title.
Pascagoula is back in action Tuesday night for the first time since falling to Pass Christian one week ago.
