OCEAN SPRINGS — A change in leadership has seemingly brought a new direction for the Ocean Springs girls’ basketball program this season.
Over the past two seasons, the Lady Greyhounds managed just eight wins but under new head coach Jonathan Lawler OSHS is already halfway to that total so far this season after dumping Pascagoula 55-31
The win moves OSHS to a solid 4-0 on the new season.

“It’s honestly been a blessing,” Lawler, who was elevated from his post as an assistant to replace longtime head coach LaShonda Smith, said. “The players have listened and tried to do what we ask of them and the results so far have been proof of their commitment. When I took over this program after my friend and mentor coach Smith it was just a blessing to be given the opportunity. Our commitment to building girls basketball in Ocen Springs aligns with the values of this school district and we are excited about what we will do here in this community for years to come.”

Lady Greyhound senior standout Starr Jackson poured in a game-high 23 points to pace OSHS to the big win over its Jackson County rival. She also had seven steals, while Nyla Newsome added 10 points, nine steals and three assists to the winning cause. Layla Daley had four rebounds and two blocks.
Pascagoula got 11 points from Ja’Katelyn Johnson and nine points from Rhylee Hilliard. The Lady Panthers drop to 0-3 with the loss.
Ocean Springs hits the road to Moss Point Tuesday night. Lawler was the head coach at Vancleave for two seasons before returning to OSHS where he served as a boys assistant prior.
