There’s nothing but state playoff action this week all across South Mississippi, and it’s time for our 13th installment of “A Look Ahead” here at SouthMiss6 Sports.
“A Look Ahead” has been a part of the journalistic fabric of prep football across the “Southern Six” for most of the past three decades. Each week of the season on Monday, we’ll take a look at the action set to kick off in that particular week all across this region.

Here are 7 games to keep and eye on in the “Southern Six” this week:
- Pascagoula at Hattiesburg (Game of the Week) — This match-up marks the third straight season that the Panthers travel to D.I. Patrick Stadium in the Hub City to battle the Tigers in the Class 6A South State playoffs. Plus, it marks the second consecutive season the match-up takes place in the Class 6A South State semifinals. Two years ago, Pascagoula pulled out a close one point win over home-standing Hattiesburg 7-6 in the opening round. Last year, the Tigers got some revenge, turning back the Panthers 33-17 en route to the state title game. Hattiesburg comes into the week at 9-2, while Pascagoula is a solid 6-5 but on a five game win streak. The winner of this one will face the winner of the Picayune-Hancock contest next week in the South State finals. This marks the 56th all-time meeting in a series that’s just about as even as it can get with Hattiesburg up 26-26-1.
- Hancock at Picayune — A rematch between these two Region 4-6A rivals as they meet in the same venue for the second time in five weeks.Picayune thumped Hancock in regular season play 59-28, and that puts the Maroon Tide up 14-3 all-time in the series. The Admirals haven’t lost a game since the, reeling off seven eight straight wins to sit at 9-2. Petal is 8-4, but has lost two out of its past four games.
