Former George County High standout quarterback Deuce Knight turned a lot of heads during his time in high school with his variety of stellar play-making abilities.
On Saturday, he did the same in his initial chance on the collegiate level.
In his first career start, Knight was extremely impressive leading his Auburn Tigers over out-matched Mercer 62-17 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Knight accounted for 401 yards of total offense and six total touchdowns. He finished the game with 162 rushing yards on nine carries with four touchdowns, including a 75-yard scoring scamper on the game’s first play from scrimmage. He was just as effective as a passer, going 15-for-20 passing for 239 yards and two touchdowns also.
“The best part was Deuce was making the right decisions and delivering the ball where it was supposed to go,” interim Auburn head coach D.J. Durkin said. “There’s a couple of those plays where it wasn’t quite how it was designed, but he just went and made a play. That’s what we’ve seen from Deuce in practice and know he’s capable of. It was really cool to watch him go do it in a game and that atmosphere. That guy’s got some great football ahead of him.”

In addition to his long touchdown scramble to open the scoring and give a hint of things to come, Knight also delivered a 91-yard scoring strike to Malcolm Simmons that came after the freshman signal-caller scrambled out of the pocket.
Knight’s six total touchdowns tied an Auburn record.

“It was a fun game. Appreciate all the guys that just helped,” Knight told reporters afterwards. “They really made the plays. I just was running and putting the ball where it needed to be.
“The coaches had a great game plan that suited me. We’ve got a lot of great players. It’s easy when you have that talent around you. You just have to do your part when everybody does theirs.”

Saturday’s win brought the Tigers one step closer to the .500 level on the season and also one more win away from becoming bowl eligible. Auburn hosts arch-rival Alabama Saturday night in the annual iron Bowl.
